Two Powerful Men f linch iu
Deadly Conflict.
Fr<.m U1« nJitorulM CM...I *wnal.
A terrilile affray occurred lietwccn
seven and eivlit miles from this city,
on the road leading to Marion, nil
Wednesday last, lietwecn John Bry
ant and Alvin Logan, both powerful
men physically, rcsultingin the death
of Bryant. Intelligence was brought
to this city on Thursday morning,
whpn District Attorney J. W. Moore
and L. K. Wood, as counsel for Lo
gan, went to the scene of the tragedy.
An examination was held at the resi
dence of Ksipiire Knglisli. It ap-
ttears that a difficulty existed Mwn-n
Brvant and his son Frank, reiqx-cl-
ing the ownership of a farm which
was being worked by Logan, both of
Item claiming the rental—the title
ling in controversy in court. We
ive the following detailed statement
f Mr. ls'gan, as no one witnessed
he deadly strife, though the tiring
aas heard distinctly by several jier-
sons:
He (Logan) was plowing. The
elder Bryant came into the Held and
asked hint who he was going to pay
the rent to. Logan renlied that lie
hould pay it to Frank Mirant. as he
hud rented it to him. Bryar.t t-hcu
iid; "AH'. I'm going to kill von!”—
Ixigan replied that lie "reeKone*! a
hru\e mail would not kill, another
without giving him u chance to de
fend himself. "1 am ready now.
All!” Ixigan sprang around tin-
horses and kept them between llilll.
gelfuml Bryant. Bryant then said:
“f will not'hurt a luiir of your head
if you will go with me over to John
Kiiglish's and sign a writing to pay
me the rent.”
Ixigan then asked hint where Eng
lish was. and Brvant replied that, he
was iu his field. Logan said lie would
go up to the house, leave his leant,
and then go over and sign the papers.
Brvant said he should not do that,
for if lie got to the house he would
not come. Logan then said if he
must lie would go. loosed his team
and started. When they reached the
middle of the field Ixtgan said lie did
hot see anything of John English.—
Brvant i .plied. John is up by l he gate.
Arrived at the gate. English was not
there: Brvant then said. “He and
Dick Hickman are up this hollow,
and you’ll have to go up there.”—
(This hollow is udismal, unfrequent
ed place. J
Logan objected, lint Bryaut or
dered him to go. holding. Ins gdn in
readiness to lire. I.ogim .-ays all hough i
lie thought it strange that English et*<
should have snob papers in his Held. «'»(•
he was not much frightened Ivfure;
now he became alarmed, llryant 1 ^ ’■
said: “Von bother me too much. I j j t , „
believe you're going to try In make a j
bulge on me. • Go on!”—at the same
time aiming the gun at him, which
Ixtgan thought was They
started thus tip the hill. Logan
thought that if ho tried to pick tip a
stick or rod Bryant would snoot hint.
He had two or throe ideas iu going
up the hill; one was that if lie had to
defend himself he would have the ad
vantage of the hill: another was that
when on the top of the hill lie would
lie in sight of Frank Bryant's house;
and another that from tin- top id' the
hill the other side was very steep,
which, with thctimlior, might enable
him to escape; lint as lie advanced,
Brvant followed, so that lie could
gain no advantage. \\ hen lu- found 1
the inquest found that the killing
was clearly in self defense and Lo-
gun was accordingly acquitted and
released from arrest As far as we
know there is not an individual in
ihe neighborhood that dissents from
the decision. Logan apjiears to (lie
deeply affected at having killed a
man! It has heen intimated in our
hearing that Brvant may have been
under the influence of temporary in
sanity. This is jiossible, hut we pre
sume all will agree with us in the
opinion that if so, lie manifested “a
method in his madness” very extraor
dinary.

I'reHted Madly l>v His Brother.
The following scene occurred at a
wedding recently, not a thousand
miles from this city. The bridegroom
was twenty years of age and the bride
fifteen. The happy groom had a
younger brother, about sixteen years
if age, present at the wedding. The
ivrcinouv commenced, and just as
the minister asked if anv one knew
why the coiipls before flint should
not Is* joined together, young Bud
commenced to weep loudly and vio
lently. The man oftJod jiaused, the
young bride prospective blushed and
trembled with eniburrassmeiit, the
bridegroom turned pule and looked
confused, the assembled party were
I consternation-struck, and the father
I of the Weeping boy sei/.ial him and
demuuded the cause of his strange
leomluct. Amid sobs and tears and
j divers shakes, he blurted out:—
j “Brother lias treated me badly. She
ought to have been mine; I loved her
liisl. and she loved me before she did
him.” The old “purient” jerked the
weeping, heart-broken hoy out of the
room, threatening hickories by the
dozen: whilst, after some time in re
storing equilibrium, the ceremotiy
went on.—(Jackson Whig.

LUNG DOGS IN AUGUSTA.
be Shot No More—A New
Method of killing Them.
Adopted.
The Police Committee of Augusta have
abolished the shooting of dogs in any
manner, but persons are to be employed
to catch all the dogs found loose in the
streets without collars. The fee for
catching is to he fifty cents per dog.
After being caught, the animals are to be
placed iu a pound, which the city will
establish. Iu this pound the dogs will
remain for twt nty-four honrs, and from
which tliir owners can redeem them upon
purchasing a collar and paying the ex-
f the capture. If the owners or

he made up liis mind that be'would
do the l»est be could, ami that w hat
he had to do must ho done <|uieljv.
He had no arms—not even a pock
et knife, and concluded that hecould
wheel suddenly and if ive Bryant such
a blow that he would not use his gun.
He executed this purpose, and hit
him fairly, staggering him, then
seized tin* gun, Bryant still holding
on to it.. They exchanged blow s, but
without much effect, both still hnving
hold of the gun, and a seven 1 tussle
ensued. Logau got tlm gun. and
then struck Bryant with his list.—
Bryant drew his revolver, which W;*

Ijogan said: “I know it was a
struggle for life or death, and prepar

revolver, with all the strength I had,

Finger Rings.
It iR in the oldest of histories, the books
of Moses, that we find the earliest records
of the uso of the finger ring. It origi
ually appears to have been a signet, used
as w« now use a written autograph; and
it is not a little curious that the unchang
ing habit of the eastern life renders the
custom as common now as it was three
thousand years ago. When Tamar de
sired some certain token by which she
should again r*oogni/.e Judah, she made
her flint ret|u sr • r Ida signet; and when
the r. ci •gi.iiion arrived, it was
