of Jimpsey A.
We are arranging and removing our
presses to our hew basement rooms, and
will soon have our steam apparatus r.t
work. Our pressman is greatly indebted
to Mr. F. V. Rice for favors granted, not
only yesterday, but on a previous oocah*

wants to move liis lumber yard, we will

Yesterday was pronounced hot by p
great number of persons whose word is
entirely reliable under ordinary circum
stances. We saw one man that was just
from Montgomery, who told us that it
was hotter down there than it is here.
He said he bid a coat in his trunk that
hail had brass buttons on it. The last
button was melted off by the sun in
Montgomery. _

was as black ns midnight, aud lives in
Deantown. Lizzie was up for disorderly
conduct and profane language. She
made her statement, which was a great
long one, nud put some very pointed

would .do, and “yon know,” &c. The
Court tried very hard to get her to stick
to the case iu point, but it was of no use.
Just like a woman, sho would liavo her

prevent her from having the last word.—
All that his Honor could get in was “five

couldn’t tell how old it was, from its

The Council last night reduced the tax
on billiard tables from $120 per year to
five dollars per month, or sixty dollars a
year. This will l>e good tffcws for propri

We learned on yesterday that the pur
chase of the old material of the late
Daily Intelligencer newspaper of this oily,
and the publisher of the Plantation, an
agricultural weekly now published here,
have merged the two concerns, and
formed a joint stock company for the
publication of a first-class agricultural
paper. Colonel Ben. C. Yancey, is Pres
ident, and among the stockholders are
dolonel C. W. Howard, W. C. Morris,
Esq., and other gentlemen, and that old
newspaper veteran of the press, Colonel
C. R. Hanleiter. The latter gentleman
is the head and business manager of the
mechanical department, and Colonel
Howard still retains the editorial man
agement of the new combination.
It is proposed to make an agricultural
paper second to none in the United
States, and with the amount of talent
and capital interested, we predict for it
the most complete suooess.

Editors Sun: The programme of ex
crcises on this lust day of the public re
view of this institution was tho presenta
tion of prizes to the best s]>eakers of
Wednesday and Thursday preceding
among tho students, l»y Rev. Mr. Ileidt,
of the Methodist Church, and the deliv
ery of an address by President Wills, of
tho Oglethorpe University at Atlanta.
An eloquent and ornate address npou
the value of elocution was pronounced by
the former gentleman, whose remarks to
the several speak* 1 s upou delivering the
prizes awarded them were singularly fe
licitous and appropriate.
Dr. Wills’ address was obviously ex
temporaneous and yet delivered with i
fluency, au ease of manner and diction
all the more pleasing and impressive be
cause it was impromptu. His theme was
“Popular Education” in all its depart
ments, and rarely does out hear such viv
id and glowing illustrations of a great
subject as be drew from the experience of
the different Euro pern nations during the
present century in this respect.
He defended the institution of an elec
tive course of studies iuour modern uni
versities ; and closed with no allusion t«>
the necessity of sanctifying all education
with the influences of Christianity, en
forcing this doctrine with grand histori
cal illustrations as before.
But for the pressure of other engage
ments to-day we should have been ph ased
to give a distinct analysis and resume of
this discourse, whose topic of thought
and argument will not be forgot ten by
those who heard it.
To-night tho session of the institute
will be closed by the anniversary celebra
tion of the Literary Societies of tho stu
dents, before which Prof. Johnson will
deliver the anniversary addn ss.
