THE BRUNSWICK * ALBANY
RAILROAD.
Wttk Mapped Beyond CMkkeit
On Wednesday last the engineers
and contractor* on the B. & A. Rail
road, operating between Cutliburt
and Eutaola, were withdrawn from
the work and ordered upon the Cuth-
bert and Cclumbns line.
This sudden change of front, we
ore authentically informed, was caused
by a combination of laud-owners
along the line to extort from the Com
pany exhorbitaut damages for the
right of way.
Cotton Hill Westward the
work or locating and staking on had,
necessarily, to be very rapid, as con
tractors were waiting for work.—
Hence the right of way could not be
secured in advance of the engineers.
After locating, and when grading
parties were about to commence work,
they were met by the owners of the
soil and forbidden to ent a tree or
move a spade of dirt, HU damage*
were assessed and paid. Enormous
prioes wore demanded, and finally le
gal proceedings were instituted to
■top the work. Contractors, with
were idle, and of con rat
ing serious loss every hour.
Mr. H. I. Kimball was in New York,
and therefore the unreasonable de
mand of the land owners could not
be immediately responded to. Just,
reasonable and fair projiositions were
made by the officers in charge, to al
low the work to proceed, and have
commissioners forthwith to assess
damages, hut the Khylocks, thinking
they nad the game dead, peniated in
their demands for the “pound of
lle*h,” and refused to wait for it till
'god them in the. usual way.
result is the abandonment of
that section for the present, at least,
and, it is to be hoped, forever. An
other line can lie found, and though
it may cost more money, we trust it
will prove to be to the interest, of the
company to find and adopt it.—Al

A difficulty occurred on the 1st

reached his lungs, lie is still living,
however, and physicians think lie will

From the Del ton citixcn, eth
We heard it stated that a terrible
murder had been committed at some
point on the Selma, Rome and Dalton
Railroad. It seems that a man was
attacked by a party of negroes and
robbed of about ♦1,000. On the dis
covery of the deed suspicion rested on
twelve negroes, nine of whom wen
caught, accused and hung, having
confessed to a knowledge and partici
pation in the crime. Now, this is
about as we hennl it. We place no
confidence in the story hut give it as
a rumor.
