The Engineer Ootps of the Georgia
Western on Saturday and yesterday were
encamped at Owl Bock Church, fourteen
■alias from this city, on the road to Ader-
hold's Fen;. They will cross the Chat-
tabooehee to-day, and probably reaoh
Carrollton or its ridnity to-morrow eve
ning. In locating the route of the Road
from this city, the main ridge has been
followed, not deviating a groat way from
the public toad leading from hero to
Aderhold’s^Ferry.
The citizens thus far have been very
liberal in granting the right of way, and
making subscriptions to the stook of the
Bold, giving encouragement that the en
terprise will be sustained by the people
along the route as far as they are able,
and that the Boad will be built.
Itis estimated by Capt. Grant, the As
sistant Engineer of the rood in charge of
tho Oorp, that tho preliminary survey
now being made, will be completed some
time between the middle of November
and 1st December, running from hero to
Elyton and back. The aim is to roach
Elyton by the 1st October.
Some of the members of tho Corps
were in the city yesterday. They are en
thusiastic in the work, and pushing for
ward with all their might All speak in
the highest terms of Capt. Grant, the
Chief of tho Corps, as being thorough,
efficient and energetic, nnd also for his
kindness and thoughtful consideration
for the wants and wclfaro of his mon.
A public meeting will bo hold to-day
at Bryant’s Cross Roads, nine miles from
Atlanta, for the pnrpose of raising sub
scriptions to the Stook of the Road. Tho
people arc earnestly moving to socurothe
building of the road.

MAYOR'S COURT SATURDAY.
After all hands had fanned themselves
and got tolerably cool, Junscn then called
MATILDA STOKJ!B,
a yallcr case, to show cause why alio and
her sweetheart was only out "playing"
when a policeman came along. 'Til was
up the morning beforo, but could not get
her witnesses to toe the mark at that
time. The only evidence adduced, was
Tilda biting John on tho urm. John
tried to sliow tho marks to the Court but
fsiled. His Honor thought if Matilda
loved her John so well os to bite him, it
would look a little too bad to fine her for
it and so tho case was dismissed.
T. ». HEXDEESOX
was working on the lower floor of a now
building, and when the fellow above
turned over a plank and lot the brickbats
drop on him, he very naturally “cussed'
out the shebang above; for which ho was
arrested and very much annoyed by being
compelled to go beforo the Mayor. In
the tint place, the Mayor thought tho
man above ought not to havo let the
bricks fall on T. E.; and in tho second
place, he thought T. E. ought not to
havo cursed when they hit him; but in
the last place, ho thought that perhaps
policemen wore a little too over-zealous
in the discharge of their duty, and very
frequently took notice of things which
did not amount to much, to the neglect
of other and weightier matters; and os a
consequence Henderson was discharged.
Other folks sometimes think the sumo
thing of somo of tho police.
OOLHXDUR MILLIOAN
choked a littlo fellow for throwing a
peach at him. Neither one wasn’t larger
than a good sized English peach; but ns
the testimony was a little conflicting, tho
ouso was postponed till this morning.
This is another case in which, no doubt,
tho police were too oager to get up a case.
There is no uso nor good sense in
taking notice of evory child or negro
frolic wbiol) one may soe; and frequently
fines are imposed for offences whiio hun
dreds of othcrB equally as bad go "scot
free" from one cause or another.

A day or two ago we alluded to the foot
that a sixtocn-pogc pamphlet, with the
foregoing titls, was panning through the
press of this office.
It is now out, and a copy is before us.
It is certainly a most valuable production,
and tho most important addition to the
Law Literature of the present day.
The writer of this notioe is not a
lawyer, hut has read the work with tho
deepest interest. It is ouo which all per
sons can, not only rood and enjoy, but
which will be highly useful and instruct
ive, even to the commonest minds
Wo have read almost overytiling that

Yesterday there was a largo attendance
at the First Baptist, who were charmed
with a most useful sermon from Rev. E.
W. YVarren, tho beloved pastor of the
Church. His text was os follows:
"I hiutr ichum / have believed and ton
jyersiuuM dull He is able to keep that which
I have committed to Him against that dal/,"
2, Tim. u, 12.
Tho preacher alluded to Timothy
tearfulness aud timidity—dreading the
odium that would be hea[>ed on him by
the people for preaohing Christ, and it
was necessary for Paul, his father in the
ministry, to urge upon him to stir up the
gift of God whioli was in him, nud not
bo ashamed of His testimony.
The preaoher presented tho following
points :
raid declares that he knows Christ—
not intellectually, for the "world by wis
dom knew not God." In liie ignoranco
be bad persecuted aud wasted the Church,
but it was spiritual ignorance, for be
knew of tbo Miracles of Christ, and had
studied the law and tho prophets care
fully. ruul know Jesus by faith, for
Jesus had testified to him, saying, I am
Jesus whom thou persooutest. This wus
enough, and Paul believed,
Hs then prosonted some points of this
knowledge—what Paul kuow about Jesus
He loved sinners; Ho was their Savior
He was their Liberator; aud was All-in
AU.
His summary up was uloqueut aud im
prussive. Christ hud met Satan nud over
came him; had met death aud conquered
it; aud hud honored tho law and satisfied
it. And now He was “ablo to save to the
uttermost all who came unto God by
Him.”
He understood the value of tlio soul-
the secret lurkings of the adversary us
be watobod an opportunity to destroy it—
tbo method aud time of Satan’s attacks.
He knew evory peril of tho soul nud how
to deliver it
He knew His interest in tho soul. It
was His by covenant with the Father,
sod His by purchase— "Y'o ore bought
with a price, not withoorruptiblo things,
as silver aud gold, but with tho precious
blood of Christ ” His lore for tho soul
is immutable. What so precious in its
value, and so costly in its purchase,
would be kopt with corresponding vigi
lance. "Nothing Bball be able to sepa
rate us from the loro of God, wbiob is iu
Christ Jesus."
CONCLUSION.
1. Christ asks to be entrusted with tho
aare and salvatiou of all the souls of this
oongrogation. "Bou, give me tby heart
2. You will give them to Christ or to
Satan—for heaven or for bell—for happi
ness or for woe.
3. The Uappiuoss of committiug all to
Christ
They will be His jewels, gathered from
the four quarters of the earth. " They
that are Chriat’s at his coming " w ill be
raised to moot Him and His angels in the
air. Ho will welcome them and they
shall be like Him, and be forever with
Him.

Yesterday morning ono ol our police
men discovered a man who had been very
drunk, aud was at that time too mnch
soaked to know whore he was, lying on
his hack on the streets. Ho was picked
up and carriod to the calaboose, and,
while on his way, gavo his name, aud
said ho was the Mayor of Cuthhert—all
ot which the policcmau did uot believe.
This is a good joke upon the Chief Jus
tice of that little city. If it should taro
out to be a veritable live Mayor, it will
learn him how to feel toward fellows who
may come before him for taking on too
much beer.
