Our quotations arc mado up moiuly
froni the largest and most responsible
dealers in the city, and may lie relied on
as correct.
In the Dry Goods line tho season is
just on the eve of nnotlicr, and there are
no positive rules for governing quotations
just at this time.
Most of our merchants have already
left for Northern markets and very soon
onr own market will be Stocked with n
supply of goods, judiciously sdocted.
Lost spring was a striking example of
the taste and care displayed by onr mer
chants in their purchases. Seeing that the
summer promised on unusual dull ono,
they bought just such thing as were sale-
able, andeonsoqnentlylmvo come through
one of tho dullest seasons on record un
scathed and uncrippled.
Now, that they have this experience it
is reasonable to presume, that their fall
stocks will lie even more suited to tho
times aud tastes of their customers than
that of tlie bciisou just closing.

.Spalding Superior Court—An In
terrating Unite—t-’rops, Etc.
Tho Fall Term of tho Superior 6ourt
of SpaldiDg county haa been in sesaion
hero tills week. Tbo docket is very
heavy—there being some important and
interesting coses on hand. Among these
oases is one that your readers have per
haps heard of, as it has attracted consid
erable attention in this section for several
years past, though it has nover como to
trial until this session.
It was commenced by I). N. Martin,
Esq., and Hon. Ben. Hill, for the com
plainant. It appears that in eighteen
hundred snd sixty-eight a hill was filed
in favor of Mrs. Ann E. Ferrell, now de
ceased, against Bichard Simms, for the
purpose of settiwg aside a deed made by
Mrs. Ferrell, to said Simms, in 1863. It
appears from the bill that Ben. W. Fer
rell, in 1860, on tbe day of bis death,
mode his will, and guvo to Mrs. Fenrcll
oertoin property—among whioli was a
house and eighty acres of land—s bean
tifnlplace; well improved; abontoneand
u half miles from tho center of Griffin.
Tho hill charged that Bichard Simms,
her brother-in-law, (who was her Aeorcst
neighbor), having groat influence with
her, persuaded her to soil her homo—giv
en to her by her husband for a homo—al
leging that one Protkro had an execution
against the estate of said Ferrell, obtain'
cd before his death. That J. L. A. All
ford was tho Executor, aud that ho sold
the ploco at Executor's sale, and that
Mrs. Ferrell became tho purchaser.
It was charged in tlie bill that Mrs.
Ferrell did not wish to Boll; but having
been advised by said Simms that hertitlo
was not good; that as soon as tlio war was
over Protkcro would sell tho placo under
his execution, and that sho had better
sell then, and take the money and go
down tlie country to her father, and buy
lands there, as slio would get a good prico
for the place where sho lived. Sho con
sented to sell in 1863. Said Simmf bo
camo tho purchaser, for $10,000 in Con
federate money. Ho paid Mrs. Ferrell
three or four thousand dollars, and paid
fonr thousand dollars on tlie Protkro
fi. fa., which was alleged to be against
her wish, believing that said Simms
would pay her tho whole 810,000, taking
the risk of tlio judgment lien.
Tho enso was conducted by B. H. Hill,
D. N. Martin and J. M. Campbell for
the claimants’, snd by Col. C. Peeples,
J. D. Stewart and E. W. Beck, for tlio
defendant.
An attempt was made by Counsel for
further eon tinuonec, but was overruled
by the Court. It is said to hnvo been
one of tbo most interesting and exciting
cases ever tried iu this Court. Tlio sym
pathy of the people was almost entirely
with tho claimants, aud notwithstanding
the great efforts of Col. Peeples, in s live
hours' speech, lie could not turn tlio
current of popular opinion. Ben. Hill
concluded tlie argument iu olio of the
ablest speeches of his lifo, making the
most cloqnent appeal in bclinlf of tho
orphan children of Mrs. Ferrell, who
wore now living upon tho charity of
their friends. No ease lias created near
the interest that this lias iu many years.
Bon. Hill added to his great reputation
in the management of this case ; while
your friend Col- C. Peeples lost—-as he
was fretful and disagreeable to Court and
counsel iu bis anxiety to make a caso for
his client, hut liis conduct is creditable
to ill-beidth more than to a look of cour
tesy for which he has heendistiugnished.
The jury delivered a verdict for tho
claimants—paying them rent for eight or
ten years— and allowing Simms pay for
improvements.
THR CROPS.
Tlie coni crops in this county is excel
lent—better than for many years. A
plenty will lie raised to supply all de
mands,
Cotton is beginning to take the mst;
and fanners are becoming uneasy for fear
their now good presjieot will be seriously
affected.
There is a growing disposition among
the fanner < to plant elovrrard grassland
inquiries as to tlie best manner of plant
ing, etc., are heard on every hand. It
wonld lie a great benefit to tlio people if
tho remark* of Ex Governor Brown at
the Agricultural Convention could be
printed, ns the intomotkill required is
contained in those remarks Brx.
Earl Bussell isN Utenti nisun thocrisi i
