New York, Septemlter 21.—The gov
ernment sold $0,000,000 of gold to-day,
and under the pressure gold declined to
13g, but rallied to 14}.
The committee has found the bond ac
counts correct
The evidence against Haggerty and
Batch seems to bo conclusive. They
were arrested upon the affidavit of Comp
troller Connolly, who stated that a war
rant was out for a pereon of high i>08ition
who had fled.
Hall has no intention of resigning,
pending the investigations.
Haggerty, his wife and Balch have
been committed upon the charge of
stealing the vouchers.
Thos. Stein, beating dispatches from
the British embassy, was killed in jump
ing from a train. He was 83 years old.
Samuel J. Tilden, Chairman of the
Democratic State Committee, was inter
viewed to-day. Being asked if what is
here entitled the ring is absolutely devoid
of strength in the country, Mr. Tilden
said: I do not think it has any solid
strength. I told Mr. Connolly when he
first sought an interview with me, on last
Fridav, to ask my advice, that he might
as well mako up bis mind that os a polit
ical power, he and others connected with
the transactions, which hod excited the
S ubUo indignation, had ceased to exist.
[y opinion is that the full must carry
down the organization which these men
control. In other words, the Democratic
party of the city and country must bo
ro-organized by au edict of the Demo
cratic party of the State. The Demo
cratic party of the nation consists of four
millions of freemen of the State; it con
sista of 450,000 citizens of the city.—
More than 100,000 of tkeso vast masses
of Democrats can never oonsont that the
sole results of thoir cxistcuco should bo
that half a dozen men might enrich
themselves by public plunder, or flint
when just arraying themselves for a Na
tional and State battle, they should be
impedod and dishonored by offences of a
small knot of local leaders.
A committee of seventy-three, this
evening, resolved to ask the District At
torney, Garvin, for permission to appeal
by counsel, in the examination and pros
ecution before Judgo Dowling, of Hag-
erty, Balch and Mrs. nagerty, who were
charged with stealing vouchers from the
Comproller s office, and appointed Wm.
C. Barrett ns such counsel.
was Wednesday, afternoon over Wiscon

Southward and East, into Pennsylvania
and New York. The low prossure in
Georgia, is probably now east of Florida.
North and northwestern winds have pre
vailed in the middle and eastern States,
with double strength during the day.
Northerly winds m the Gulf Htatcs;
northeast winds with cloudy weather in
the Atlantic, and brisk, southeast winds
with falling barometer now prevail west
of Michigan and Indiana. Clear weath
er is evervwliere reported except on the
South Atlantic coast.
rroboMItlss.
An area of very low barometer proba
bly exists north of Nebraska, after hav
ing apparently passed over Oregon, on
Wednesday morning. Falling barom
eter, with increasing winds from the
southeast and southwest, are probable,
for Friday morning, from Lakes Huron
and Superior to the Missouri river.—
Easterly winds for the lower lakes. Pleas
ant weather in the Atlantic and Gulf
States.
