Unity in the Democratic Party.
As we have often said before, we again
repeat, note is eminently “the wed time
of ideas," touching the policy which
should govern the Democratic Party, in
their next General Convention, both in
relation to platform and candidate,; in
order to effeot that unify in Council and
unity in Action, which are oasential for
the rescue of Public liberty from the
grasp of thoso now holding Power, and
whose object is Centralized Empire.
On tba line of policy we hare advo
cated, we take the liberty of giving onr
readers to-day, some extracts, from a
letter jnst received from a Democrat, of
Maine. We do not know the writer per
sonally, hat we know him from reputa
tion, and assure our readers he is a gen
tleman of position iu that State, whose
statements moy be relied upon, and whose
views and opinions arc entitled to high
consideration. In reply to his inquiry
we say, we believe there is a mode by
which the ‘‘ocmseiumj honorum omnium,"
stated by him, can be obtained.
Let there be a free interchange of views
between the leading man of the true De
mocracy, in every Stato of the Union; and
let them see to it, that no delegate be
sent to the General Convention, who is
notlme to the “Jefferitmi.iii creed”—and
who will, under no circumstances or any
temptations, consent to a Departure
therefrom, so far as the Democratic or

Dear Sir: I have just rend a recent
communication of yours to The Atlanta
Sun, on “The great issues involved in
the content of 1872, and the unity of the
Democratic Party. ”
As n Northern Democrat, I thank you
for that article, as well os for that most
admirable and exhaustive work, your
“Constitutional view of the war between
the States.” Were this on ago in which
the maasos of the people, or any consid
erable number of them, would stop to
examine into tho principles of govern
ment in general, or of onr goverumont iu
particular, a careful perusal of your vol
umes would lead thorn to discard central-
ization, and to cling to tho “Jeffcrooniau
creed."
“You aic quite right, especially so far
as Maine is concerned, iu ussortiug that
the Resolutions of her late Democratic
Convention so far as they indorse the
“New Departure," do not express the
views of the honest masses of the De
mocracy. It would be difficult to flud
Democrat in Maine, who would maintain
that the 14th and 15tli amendments are
just and right."
“ But the great muss of the Democrats
of Maine heartily eoudomn those amend
ments. In this Congressional District 1
have oonvened with hundreds of Demo
crats siaoc our State Convention, and 1
hare not get met teilh the first one who ap
proves the “ New Departure. ” JRt univer
sally condemned. Not one of our county
conventions in this District would in
dorse it. Not a siugle county oouveu-
tion in the State directly accepted the
amendments. Three or four of them
onjy did go so far iu that direction as to
indorse the State platform. So severe
and general was the condemnation of the
State platform among the massea of the
party, after it was promulgated, even
though its acquiescence in the amend
ments was in a very mild form and sugar-
coated with a Bovero "condemnation of
the means by which they were adopted,"
the few advocates of the “ New Depart
ure" did not dare to ask for an ex
press and independent approval in tho
county conventions. What is true of
Maine in this particular, I apprehend, is
true of all the Northern States, Ms
cluisetts excepted.
Policy, and policy nlouo, secured for
the “ New Departure" its approval in the
■tale conventions that have been held.
The late elections in both Maine and
California have demonstrated that that
" policy" waa most impolitic. The “New
Departure" did not give ns a tingle Re
publican vote in either of those States.
It chilled thousand* of Democrats so they
could work with no heart or teal.
My own judgment is, that the “New
Departure’' is now dead. I have strong
hopes that wo shall not even hc.tr of it
in onr National Convention next year.
You must have observed that, of Iota,
even the New York World has not been
very enthusiastic over the amendments^
I entirely agree with you that thKe
must be "union in sentiment" before
there can bo "unitod action.” In ordor
that there may he this "uuiou iu seuti-
meat” in our National Com tmliou next
year, should Uisre not be an exchange
of views, previous to its assembling, among
leading man f”

The Radicate, with the aid of bayonets, have thrust upon us the unconstitutional and wickedly opprensivc
„ ‘depart" from the faith of their fathers. Some of them bare already goue over
to the enemy’s camp ; and while they and the Radical cohorts which they have Joined are calling out Ins

Verily, if ws should hold our peace, “the stones would cry out" W* cannot remain silent W* cannot
thua counsel our people to accept and welcome their own ruin, aud thank God for the privilege !
It Is of the utmost importance that these issues be discueeed now ; for the adoption of a time-serving
“ departure " by the General Convention of the Party will be, not only wrong in principle, but in our
jodgmeut it will be fatal in policy.
Fidelity t» the Oonstitutiou is the true test of Democracy in everv State of the Union, and we recognize every
one who is s true friend to that ascred instrument, as a co-worker with we is the great cause of American
Liberty. The rights and liberties of the whole people are jeopardised—not any more so in the South than
in the North; aud we of the South have no Intervals at stake iu the momentous issues of the day, whio t
arenot common to North and South, alike.
