Sir: I waa in Yorkville a few days ago.
While there I met an aged son of Africa.
His wool was white, his brow wrinkled.

large number of Ku-Klui prisoners were
incarcerated. I stopped him, beii

•Tee, bom,” ha replied. ‘Tea been
to see my young mama. Day got him in
dar.”

replied, shaking his head.

no chance giv him o' clarin’ hiaaelf.”
“ That is too bad. Is he married ?”
"My young maasa married ? Ha, ha,
k No, boss. He’s picked him out s
gal, an’ soon as the the military lets him
ont o’ jail he’s gwino for her; bnt he’s
got a mother. Binoe old ma*tar's dead,
r young boss is her sole independence.

Here the good old African made a
pause, after which he said, with on ur
gency of tone that bespoko the sincurity
of his word*:
Ah, boas, if I was de President of de
United States I'd die before I'd let my
own people be crammed in jail dia way
by «o, no’ kept here widout a hearin'
I d stop this. Td set things to rights!'!
I bade the earnest old negro good-bye,*
and passed on to the gloomy jail, where
Kn-klux prisoners were "huddled to
other like hogs in a pen, so'driv' about
ike cattle.” I found tbe prisoners
guarded by soldiers as though they were
captive* of war. T) ore was tho dark,
dreary-looking building, with its grated
windows and forbidding aspect. There
~ beheld the sad faces of many an unfor-
mste victim of Radical persecution

onging to be in the sweet sunshine with
out, and longing for their homes where
they had left their loved ones in tears, in
loneliness, in despair. There stood the
