felony, and bail was refused. A similar
warrant was served out on Connolly at
Ludlow Street Jail, a* a retainer, should
he secure bail on the first indictment
Tweed’s testimony covers one hundred

The main charge is fraudulently auditing
accounts. He was heartily cheered by
his friends when brought into Court.
He was committed to the Toombs without
bail; but was afterward token before

who released him under $5,000 bait
The bank statement shows the follow
ing: Loans, decrease nearly $11,000,000.
Specie, increase $2,500,000. Legal ten
ders, decrease $125,000. Deposits, de
crease $4,500,000. Circulation, decrease
$1,000,000. Shipment of specie, over
$500,000.
The Workingmen’s Union took no ac
tion upon the question of joining the

the temporary gives way to permanent

The commission decides that the first
question is whether the commission have
jurisdiction, which depends upon wheth
er the claimant is a British subject, with
in the menuing of the treaty. Tho plea
that the claimant’s residence in Georgia
excluded him from the treaty is denied,
and the whole demurrer dissolved; but
the United States Government is at lib
erty, if it sees fit, to take issue upon the
facts alleged in tho memorial.
Meteorological.
A rain storm, probably accompanied
with high winds, is apparently threaten
ing the coast of California. An area of
low barometer aud threatening weather
will probably, on Sunday, extend north
eastward to wands Arkansas. Southeast
erly winds and cloudy .veathcr prevailing
on theGulf coast. Fleosant weather con
tinues in the South Atlantic States, with
southerly winds. Tho low barometer on
Lake Superior moves east and southeast
ward, with northwesterly winds on the
upper lakes. Southwest winds on the
lower lakes and Middle and Eastern
States, with threatening weather in New
York and New England. Cautionary sig
nals continue for this evening at Chicago,
Milwaukee, Grand Haven, Detroit, To
ledo, Cleveland, Buffalo, Rochester, Os
wego.

ing the caboose ear of tho material' train
on tho Virginia aud Teuneofeee Railroad
was thrown to the bottom of u ravine
while crossing ft bridge near Salem.
Conductor Robert Fagurond a colored
man named Flunk Campbell were killed.
The contents of the stovp sot fire to the
destroying it, and burning up the
two bodies, together with several spans
of tho bridge.
Governor Walker pardoned ex-Mayor
Chahoon, heretofore twice convicted of
co mplicity in the Haneutciu forgery. A
very general satisfaction is expressed at
this action of tho Governor, who. states
that his priucijial reason for so doing is
that it was earnestly recominvudod by a
very large uumber of worthy citizens.
