have a largo number of laborers on hand

Connolly,Richards, Tweed and Dolin are
on Tweed’s bail. Tweed has surrendered
himself to the Sin riff and resigned the
commonersliip of public works. Mayor
Hall has appointed George W. Van Nort
Commissioner.
The elevator gave way in the Fifth
Avenue Hotel' this p. m. Four servants
were seriously injured.
Mayor Hall has not sent his resigna
tion to the Union Club, but it is expected
that he will do so at the regular meeting,
Rev. Wm. Taylor, of Liverpool, lias
accepted a eall to tbe Broadway Taberna
cle Church of this city.
Connolly was not able to perfect his
bail to-day, owing to the withdrawal of a
lady who htd offered to go on tho bond
for one hundred thousand dollars. This
afternoon G. Van Nort was sworn in

rens have held a meeting in opposition
to tho expenditure by the city of ten mil
lions of dollars to the building uf the
Southern Railroad.
The committee for the erection of the
McPherson monument will sue sculptor
Jones for $19,125 for failure to complete
the work within the specified time.

jary, empannelled to investigate the Chi-
aa^o bribery ami corruption against cer
tain members of the Common Council,
made partial presentation to-day. They
found true bills against two aldermen
and two ex-aldermen. The work of tho
grand jai j is but partiat1y accomplished,
and it is expected that every guilty mem
ber will be indicted, and this will prob
ably weed out half the board.

Hurveyor-General Bewell, of the Inter
nal Revenue Bureau, has left for Nash

facturing whisky from cotton seed.
A policeman, in an attempt to serve a
Search Warrant for a stolen watch, was
killed by a woman who had purchased
