cotton statement ss follows :
Since September 1st, np to this dste,
March 1st, there has been received in
Madison, 5900 bales of cotton, against
7818 bales last year to snmodate, a alio r-
ing a decrease of 1858 bales. On 1st of
Maroh 1870, there had been received at
this point, at this date, 4820 bales, which
shows an increase this year over 18G9 and
'70 of 1140 bales. At this date, in Mtdi-
sou, Ox., thero bad been received in 1870

A Melancholy Suicide-A Warm
ing to Young Men.
We clip the following aocouut of a mel
ancholy suicide from the New York Her
aid of Tuesday lost:
Some further particulars have boen ob
tained in rotation to the suicide of John
Henry Lyons, the youth not yet ninetocn
years of age, late of No. 312 East Fifty -
fourth street, whose death waa noticed in
Monday’s Herald. John, a rare quiet
and eccontrio young man, lived at home,
and was finishing hit education at one of
the exoellent sohools of the city. About
four weeks ago a package of money con
taining nearly $150, belonging to hia
father, fell into John’s hands, and ho was
tempted to appropriate the funda to his
own use, without for a moment consider
ing what the consequences might be.
Having pocketed the cash, John was
afraid or ashamed to remain at home,
and collected • few useful articles of
clotliiug, started out without any settled
purpose, not knowing whither he was
going. He, however, visited some rela-
tivoa on Staten Island and elsewhere,
thus consuming two weeks without even
commnnioating with his parents. John
then secured board at a bouse on Sixth
Avenue, near Thirty-fourth street, but
wss exceedingly unhappy, and longed to
see the smiling faces of the loved onesat
home. He, however, oould not make up
his mind to return and ask forgiveness of
his father, bat wrote to him asking for
an interview.
To this note Mr. Lyons paid no atten
tion, and the sorrowing youth sought
othor means of obtaining an interview
with his father, bnt without suocess. Tho
miserable boy was now reduced to despe
ration, and in a last moment resolved to
die. Acting accordingly, he proceeded
to a paint store nearby, procured a quan
tity of Paris greeu, and returning to his
boarding house, asked his landlady for a
tea-spoon, saying he wanted to take some
powders. This was last Friday night.
After swallowing a dose of the poison,
John started for the residence of his
uncle, Mr. John H. Lyons, living at No.
244 East Sixtieth street, to ask bis forgive
ness. On the way thero, however, ho
was seized with vomiting, and, overcome
from the effects of the poison, fell on the
corner of Fifty-fonrth street and Third
avenue, where an officer of the Nine
teenth precinct found him. John, in re
ply to a question from the officer, gave
Lis name, said he was from Texas and
•aid he did not want to live, aa he had
no homo. At the station hous, however,
he gave the name and addreaa of hia
undo, Mr. John H. Lyon, and requoated
that lie be immediately sent for, which
was done. Mr. Lyons instantly respon
ded to the call, when his unfortunate
nephew told him that he had taken poi
son and wished to see him and ask hit
forgiveness before be died. A doctor
was summoned and the family of tho
yonng man notified. It waa deemed beat
to remove him to Bellevue Hospital, but
he was past recovery and died five hours
after admission. Such is the sad fate of
the misguided young man.

IIow to Live on 91,200 a Year.
Under the heading of "Household Ex
penses," the New York Timea ha* called
out a long list of communications allow
ing how a middle-clan family may bo
maintained in good homes and nave every
comfort on $1,200. The following letter
strikes ns aa by long odds the most feeble
and oommonly practiced;
“Your inquinn are by far more nu
merous than the replies n* to the mode
of making both cods meet when keeping
houee or living on a email salary or in
come I have for tho past two yean kept
houee, with a wifo, three children and
two servants, on an incomo of loss than
$1,200 per uunam, and from present ap
peantnees shall do it again this year. My
plan is this: I spend what I need to live
well, keepings monthlyaooount with the
grocer, butcher, ko.; I let tho bills accu
mulate for a period of say two months, and
st this time the treasury is empty and the
bills considerable. Then (and this is
tha zrsnd idea) my wife collects the bills,
and goes, with tean in her eyes, to bor
father, pleads poverty, talks the old gen-
tlemnn out of a chock, and the crisis ia
met. The next time, to give him a rest,
one of the two inevitable well-off broth-
ers in-law ia called into requisition. This,
yon will see, only happens twice a year to
each, and it don’t hurt them much, so wo
swing along.
“'The above is the only feasible plan I
see, and ia, I know, the moat oommon
way. No young man, in my opinion,
