*9* The ooniest yesterday fer United
States Senator did not surprise those
well posted. It has been all the while
conceded that Oen. Gordon would lead
off well on the first ballot. As expected
Ur. Stephens followed next iu point ol
strength; then come Mr. Hill, followed
by Oof. Fielder. Mr. A. T. Akorm&u
brought np the roar. Intense interest
will he fell and manifested during this
morplng until the adjournment of tho
General Aiaemhly for tho day.
No one can well vontnre a prediction as
to what will be tho final result of tho con
test.
kW" Mr. Stephens' eleotion now would
bo a vindication of the will of tho peo
ple in the past, in the fact that ho was
elected in I860 United States Senator,
and received every Demooralio vote iu
the Legislature in 1883 for tho flaunt
office, cv-n when under the disability
set. Whon he was thus eleoted, he was
not permitted to take bur peat Ilia elec
tion again now that ho cannot bo pre
vented from taking hie seat, would ex
hibit the best evidence that the people
of Georgia do hot intend to give even a
qua* endorsement of that measure.
89* Without disparaging the frue
merife-of the other candidates, it is our
belief from the boat information we can
get from all p«H» of tha S ate that Mr.
Btopheni' eleotion to the U. 8. Senate
wonld give more general satisfaction to
the masses then that of any other man's.
Tho appleaso that ho received at tho
Capitol last Saturday'night, during his
the heal evidence that the
popular sentiment and the popular heart
are with him. Every man and woman
who beard that apeeoli felt the horning
impress of the truthfulnrsa and sincerity
of everyjioulcnco Mr. Stephens uttered.
They knew thst lie told them the truth
st every point be made.
fcT An elcotiou to tho United States
Senate can add nothing to the repntation
or renown of Mr. Stephens; hence, he
oau have no personal axibilion in tho
matter. Having a long experience in the
Federal Councils, and an intimate an l
extensive acquaintance with leading men
ol the.North ol all abodes of politioal
sentiment, with whom ho is on terms of
personal friendship, we do not question
his ability to rendu the people of Geor-
-giw more real service than any other man
whom'the State oonld send. For these
reasons, he is willing to •aerifioe the
comforts of his home if he can thereby
promote the prosperity and honor of his
Utate, and exert bis i nflienoe in behalf
of She happiness of his people.
