We repeat that,’for the political
and social anarchy which prevails in
Louisiana, Gen. Grant is responsible
to nis race aM country. For the
blood that has been shed heisretpon
sible to hi* God. If, as is to be feared
tbe spirit of lawless antagonism, bit-
-uu ulmy tar animosity and implacable batreu
. . that bos been engendered by his partv
made where 1 w ^j 1 BO d co-opera"-
tion, shall result in a war of races,
with all Its fearful consequences to
both whites and blacks—if the fire
kindled »t Colfax Court-house should
spread its devouring flames through
involving the lives and
pie, upon Grant's
awful responsibility.
Referring to tty difficulty between
the me#*'in Grant Parish, 1 La., in
which, (be negroes held possession of
the. Court-house for several ty*, le
the Sheriff, and driving the
white people Item Colfax, the Odum
bus Enquirer says they held* posses
sion thus for several days, plundering
the housss of the peaoeful citizens
wbhm they, had driven out, and set
ting all law and authority at defiance.
Yet the Fedeial authorities moved
not. Out in a few days tbe outraged
and plundered citizens rallied and
returned to Colfax, not as a mob, but
under the lead of the Sheriff and as
htl legal posse, and driving the negro
bandits out, retook possession of the
place.' The Enquirer draws this de
duetioo:
This is the turn of tho aflhir that,
has aroused the Administration and
stimulated such a sudden determina
tion to vindicate legal authority, to
exeeute the laws, and to bring offend
ers to justloe. The liaaioal ox has in
turn been gored, and the military arc
going to see about it. Some negroes
have been killed while defying the
State laws, and now nn effort will be
made to punish the whites for it un
der a law of the United Staten
The Savannah Republican thinks
that, after allowing the Mndoci to
escape from the lava beds,to the
polioy of mountains that the war ia virtually
ended, as they will separate and
mingh with other bands, and it oaught
impossible to be identified. Con
cludes the Republican:
A few defiant puffs of smoke frrtf
the howitsers and the rattling
grape against the solid rocks, and the
valiant, dashing army of the West
will pull up its tent pins and file sor
rowfully away for San Franriteo,

The Savannah Advertiser, of Sun-

public and private life.
He was born in the county of Bryan
on the 19th of November, 1813. Pur
suing his education in that oounty,

young man and accepted a teacher’s
place in the Chatham Academy, then
under the supervision of Prot Geo,
White. He subsequently studied
law, was admitted to the bar, and
opened an office in that city in 18fti,
siuoe which time he hon resided them.
Although not a politician, Judge
Harden occupied repeatedly pog^oEs

to the practice of his profession, and
