of notoriety we do not seek. It is
species of journalism we abhor and
will not countenance. It belongs to
a different latitude. We have no am

leave the Herald to indulge in it as
the staple commodity of its great eh'
terprise. If it can lire out a preca-

intend it would seem, was
prompted by something ether than
good motives. We quote two para.

We now dismiss any farther discus

The impious Ben Butler, when
Hew Orleans was occupied by the
United States troops under bis com
mand, with sacrilegious hand and
base intent, caused a false inscription
to be made npon the Jaekton monu
ment, which was long ago erected by
the oity and had at that time put
upon it what was in those days deem
ed sufficient in the wsy of inscription;
bnt the Dntch Gap hero, who made
a brutal and cowardly war npon wo
men, had the following carved npon
the monument, which he no doubt
considered a grand military triumph.
It is in keeping with all his feats of
generalship and soldierly conduct
during the war.
“The Union l it must and s&all be
preserved.”
The Pioayune shows this inscrip
tisn to be false in one respect.
General Jackson, at a public din
ner in Washington, given in honor
of Jeflerson’s birthday, uttered these
words: “The Union, it must be pre
served.”
The words “snd shall,” consti
tute an interpolation and forgery by
Gen. Bntlsr. At the same dinner,
Mr. Calhoun gave the following toast,
not at all antagonistic to Jackson’s,
but being wider in its scope, and
more explicit:
“ The Union, next to our liberties, the
most dear. May we all remember that it
can only be preaerved by respecting the
rights of the States, and distributing,
the benefits and hardens of the
has proven that they are by no means
infallible. Majorities have often
brought nations to ruin, when the
principles of minorities would hare
saved them.”
The truth of the foregoing para
graph was most practically illustrated
by the Democracy in the late Presi
dential campaign, it we are to con
cede thut the Greeley clement
wus in the majority, a con
cession we are not willing
to make. Admitting, however, the
affirmative of the proposition, there
never was a clearer instance where
the majority of a party more com
pletely ruined its own prospects in
any campaign known to tl.e political
history of this country.

A member of The Sun Publishing
Company has twioe made a personal
request at the office of the Herald
that the foregoing statement be Mr-

has been ignored, it is due ourselves
that such comments be mod j by us in
regard to this act of discourtesy as

came to Atlanta, it was his desire lo
maintain*the most kindly relations
with hi* city cotemporaries; that if he
disagreed with either, he intended to
discus* that disagreement with oour-
tesy and in the spirit of fraternity.
Hence, we have endeavored to treat
tsacfr'with that respect that should be
entertained by one gentleman to
wards another. But we soon saw on
the port of the Herald a disposition
to make (mail flings at The Sun,
with the purpose, as we thought, to
provoke controversy and thereby turn
whatever it could to the advantage
of itself. Preferring to go on in the
even tener of our way, we paid no
atteution to those little paragraphs
of the Herald’s, for the reason that we
conceivod our space more valuable
devoted to news ancL general infor
mation than it would oe -occupied in
bandying foolish paragraphs with
that paper. We desired no dis
cussion with it, as we law that we
could not do 10 in a proper spirit.
When the tender of assistance, to
which the Herald alludes, was made
on Saturday lost, the business man
ager of The Sun promptly replied
to it, thanking the Herald Com
pany the its proffer, but informing
them that pe nad not needed the as
sistance. He did not state that we
.jtosl (jam relieved.” We stated to
our assootetoe, aa soon • -We were in-
fonsed of MBs tender of the Herald,
thafw* tittiered there was an objeot
in <t oiliar than what appeared upon
its face. The use made by the Her
ald of this professed tender of friend,
ehip is so manifestly patent that
it has been bondemned by every gen
tleman who has expressed an opinion
on the subject in our hearing. We
did not ssk the Herald (hr assistance,
because we did not need it. It came
voluntarily and offered a favor with
no other purpose, as we then behaved,
than - te tons it, aa was dsubtlesa
thought, to a little cheap notoriety—
a sort of questionable capital no one
oould fail to see wag spurious. Be
fore we would resort to any thing of
the sort, we would quit the profession
and go to something else, in whioh
our incapacity and want of good taste
would not be made so patent to the
public.
When it is stated that, on ane or
two ommumk, The Sen Coup ant
extended financial faVors to the Herald
npon the application of on* of too
proprietor! of that paper, whioh were
cheerfully responded to, it is only
necessary to leave the public to judge
of the impropriety of the conduct of
the Herald Company in the matter
nndar discussion. And, yet, in the
face of all this, and at the request of
tot senior editor of the Herald, who
wa* on Tuesday last, Involved in a

of our amociatee to go to his own

Rev. J. W. Burke, who is associated
with Mr. W. A. Hemphill,dn the
State printing, published a card yes
terday in the Herald, in which he
says :
“So far ee I am able to determine from
an examination, I see no entry to justify
charge of an attemDt to defraud the
Bute, end io ell my conversations on the
nbjeet. I have always expressed tba opin
ion that nron a liberal eonatrnotion of
the law. Mr. Hempbiil will be able to
astisly the Oomptroll- r and tbs Governor.
Ho baa always expressed bis willingness
to correct any errors that may be in his
aoeonnt. Uolil be fails to do so, let no
menoondemn him."
Rev. Mr. Burke is a practical prin
ter and is one of the most truthful
and conscientious men in Georgia.
We are glad be feels it due to Mr.
Hemphill to exonerate him from all
implication in the charge made.
He has made no attempt to defraud
the State.
Mr. Hemphill may rest assured
that the endorsement of his official
integrity, by snch a man as John W.
Burke, is worth a great deal to him
in pnblio estimation.

The Picayune makes this correc
tion of Butler’s interpolation from
the original account of what occured
at that dinner, taken from the Wash- g
ington papers of that day, fully veri
fied.
Butler is base enough to perpetrate
any fraud or try to perpetuate any
falsehood, if he has a motive to do so.
Nothing stems to be too mean—too
low—too base—lor him to be guilty
of, whether it be insulting decent
women, stealing spoons and silk
dresses, or desecrating the graves of
the honored dead.
bHULKKA IN NEW ORLEANS.
The Louisville Courier-Journal of
the 19th thinks "there is little doubt
that cholera has made its appearance
in New Orleans,” and that without
proper precautions it will shortly ap
pear in Louisville and other oities
having direct communication with
“the Crescent City.” The Cincinnati
papers of the I3th slated that
prominent citizen of New Orleans
had diet! of cholera on board
steamer plying between those two
oities; and a few days ago the tele
graph announced that three New Or
leans vessels had been quarantined at
Havana becauso of rumors of cholera.
We have looked carefully into the
New Orleans papers and have teeu uo
notice of the existence of this grea
soourge in that city, save that the
Picayune of the 20th inst, contains
the official mortuary report of Dr. S.
0. Russell, Secretary of the Board of
Health, giving the number oi deaths
occurring lrom various diseases be
tween 8 o’clock, r. m., on the 11th,
and 6 o’clock, p. ii., on the 18th of
May. In this list we find the follow,
ing: “Cholera—Sporadic, 8; Cholera
Infantum, 12; Cholera Morbus, 21”—
lrom which it appears officially that
for the week ending at 6 p. h., 18th
May, there had been eight deaths in
the city from sporadic cholera.
We do notapprehend anything like
epidemic prevalence of the disease at
this season of the year, and trust the
city will entirely escape the scourge.
