Viboinia City, May 23.—A letter from
S, ruce Mountain, Nevada, reports that
the Indian affairs have about reached a
crisis. Hideously puiuted warriors have
been stealing lead from the furnaces,
buying ammunition, and are having war
dunces. They have notified the aettlers
to leave. The impression here is that
a general Indian outbreak is being
planned.

London, Ontario, May 23.—A boiler
in an Ontario mill explod ed, killing one

The atrocities of the insurgents caused
intense excitement here. The militia de

Thuy have been tiansferred from the
fort to veasela in the barber for safety.
It is probable that a number of well
known Carlisle will be arrested and held
•a hostages. A levy en masse is expected
to aot against tue Carlisle.
THE MODOO WAR.
Faibobild’s Rancho, May 23.—A Con
ner was intercepted by Gen. Davies eu
route from the Lava Beds to Brewers,
whoreupon the Warm Opting Indians
and scouts were recalled and the pro-
gran uie changed. Gen. Davies has es
tablished his headquarters at Fairchilds,
23 miles Northwest of the Lava Beds.
The soldiers sealed a ridge 25 test hiyh
in the face of the Modooe and drove
them away. Captain Haabrook did not
lose a man. The captured squaws report
the operations of the last few months.
It is reported that Uhooknaaty Frank,
Shooknaaty Jake, BhooKnasty Bill,
Steamboat Frank, and Ellenamaa Hook
er, Jim'a father, Boston Niok, and aev-
eral other Modoos, were killedjaad many
woondud. Curly Headed Jack is seri
ously wounded and Little John is nnable
to move rapidly. This delayed the Mo-
docs. At this stage the Warm Bpring
Indians made some hostile demonstra
tions, Thu eaptured squaws refuse to
speak further.
Iu the stampede, Mrs. Hendricks,
alias Liapeey, threw her ohild away,
hoping to asoape. The squaws killed
the obud and brought it to eamp. The
eaptured squaws are Mrs. Wechmatel,
two sisters of Boston Charlie, the mother
of Block Jim, and a girl. No bravos
ware eaptured.
Two Indiana have been sent to the
Medopa offering them terms of surren
der.
General Davis report* that there is no
trouble to be apprehended irom the
Klamatht.

Ybbka, May 23.-The Hat Creek
band, numbering fifty men, women
children, surrendered and wen pieced
under guard. Fifteen worriers, among
whom ore Bogus Charles, Sbocknssty,
Jim Conley, Head Charley, Head Doctor
Fiandle, and others of the best fighting
men that CapL Jack had surrendered,
it appears on condition. It is supposed
that then are no warriors with OspL
Jaok, whose whereabouts is unknown.

The war is considered over. Gen. Davis'

route for Orleans. A few ponies ridden
by the Modoce were gaunt and wank—
scarcely able to bear the women and
ahildren as they rode in. Nearly all the
braves wore portions of Federal uni
forms, and all entered the camp in
funeral iprooeosion—no noise among
the soldiers. The Modoos said noth
ing. Davis advsnoud and was form-
all- introduced. Boston Chaney is abont
twenty years old, and speaka English
welL He smiled sweetly and shook Davis’
hand; then all the leading warriors earns
forward and greeted Davis cordially. All
laid their guns beside them and awaited
orders. Davis demanded their pistols
and other arms; he then aisigned them
to a oatnp, telling them they would be
shot if they attemp'ed to escape. There
were half raked obiidren, and a squaw
who oould scarcely hobble. Fairchild says
there ore tweuty back still ia Cotton
Wood. The disaffection is confirmed
by the Captain of the band, who tays he
parted with OspL Jack eight days ago.

Official dispatches reoeived here to
night from Gen. Schofield say that Gen.
Davis reports that abont half the Mo-
does, being whipped and hard prersed
by Haabrook, have surrendered uncon
ditionally. Davis says he will pub the
pursuit of Oapt. Jaok and his party, and
hopes to en*. the war soon.

Washington, May 23.—Atorntdo with

Cincinnati, May 23.—The officers of
the Kilgore state that none of those
