We tote the liberty of presenting
to ourfarifon to-day an exceedingly
interesting letter from Senator of bo Southern mao intcrtaininwoDcmo

cheap watei transportation between
these sedtioni. The letter was not
writte^fW |MMle*tfon,but it contains
so mntfc good sound practical sense
upon this highly important subject,
we deem it due alike to him and
oar readasa that hia views shonid be
gwneraUy known—the time for their
presentation ■ contemporaneous with
the action of the Convention in thii
ia opportune.
The v»wb of the Convention lor
securing cheap water transportation
for the grain of the West to the At-
lantic f j<AH .«msfc hate been con
fined exclusively to these three great
canals, one through Georgia, one
through Virginia and one round
Niagara Falla
Wo have seen no probable esti
mates of the cost of these combined
works, but we take occasion to repeat
whuttoetave often arid before, that
in ouf*opinion a ship canal across
the Peninsula of Florida will be
found to be decidedly the cheapest
and most feasible of any of the sug
gested schemes, whether undertaken
by the Government or individual en
terprise.
When the actual cost of the pro
posed Great Western Canal is known,
thoae who may be called upon to
recoil nr on those who
make thetD.. No other Honthero Demo
crat that in know of has stepped for
ward to declare his opinion in cm-

matters. No other Democrat has
stopped forward to deprecate the
chargee against Gen. Grant of nepotism
and gift taking as iajiuious, and to de-
dare th> m in hia opinion aa utterly un
true.
Ii is because Mr. Stepheoa has volun
tarily done this, und in doing so, under
take* to rebuke the entire Democratic
pram of the country, that we have vert
mildly characterized this conduct aa
championiaing Gen. Grant—as exhibit
ing extraordinary admiration and to
amotio enthusiasm for Gen. Uraai. it

romantic for a Southern Democrat to

We never designed to intimate that
Mr. Stophaoa concealed before the eleo

the contrary, it was notorious that in 1
published book, as well as in private con
venation, Mr. Stephens expressed ad
miration of him. All we meant to inti
mete was that notwithstanding the
knowledge of this fact, it was not made
a point against him, was not dismissed
by way of embens ingthe canvass and
axdtinR opposition to him, bnt was
magnanimously suppressed. It was not
discussed, because snob e dismission
might have engendered at least a re-

for Mr, Stephens, It was agreed by com

HR. flTItPIIKNV OPINION OF CKS.
GRANT.
We are gland to stand corrected, if we
have in a ruoirnt editorial ascribed di
rectly or inferentiaUy to Mr. Stephen*. a
higher edmirefaon of Gen. Grant that he
really entertains. It gives us pleasure
to copy from Tim Atlanta Son the com
ments of Mr, Stepbeus on that editorial.
It is especially pleasant to see in those
oouiuieHto 1 disclaimer of Being a eulo
gist of Gen. Grant. At Die same time
we an compelled to ay that we know
men fur making assaults upon Gen.
Grant's personal character, hia ability i,r
integrity, end who baa asserted that all
mch assault* will recoi
like Oriental Idolatry for e Southern
to be ao blind to thore defect* of
its char actor and those blemishes
against
This forbearance wee entitled to some
consideration In return. It was for this
reason, Mr. Stephens' stopping to the
front to obampionlze Gen. Grant, and
to rebuke hia assailants, was cri tioib«d
by us. The publio must judge whether
the terms of that oriiioism be
tmvagent or undeserved.
It be bad uttered this rebuke before
the Congressional election it would have
been resented. The voters of the
Eighth District, who directly by tbeii
votes, or by staying from the polls, oon-
•ented to let Mr. Stephens go to Con-
r as, woold have resented the rebuke
a significant manner. Bat on this
subject there was a truce by tacit agree
ment.—Attgutia (Go.) CotuUlulionalitl,
lflrt May, 1878.
We have but few comments to
make upon the ubove editorial of our
distinguished cotemporary of Au
gusta. It seems to us he does not
properly distinguish between admo
nition and rebuke. “ Mr. Stephens ”
has never intended to set himself up
as a censor of his Democratic breth
ren of the press, nor bus ho ever
“ stepped forward ” in any spirit of
arrogance to * rehnko ” them in any
matter whatever. If ho has warned
them against making “assuults”
whieh would, in his opinion, efleot
nothing bnt “ a recoil ” on them
selves, it has been done in the spirit
of kindness, and he has been actuat
ed in doing it, by nothing hut his
deep interest und earnest desire for
tho ultimate success of tiiut cause
on which the liberties of tho country
depend. The best of causes in law
and in politics are often lost by in
discreet advocate, making them turn
upon side and erroneous issues. Our
ootemporary is oertainly in error in
stating in the manner he does, that
“ Mr. Stephens ” had not uttered
these words of admonition, which
are here styled “ Uebuke,” before the
lute Congressional elec!ion. “Jlr.
Stephens ” had just as distinctly and
emphatically uttered the same senti
ments before as lie has since the Con
gressional election. This the record
will show and the result too. But
enough of this lor the present. Time
will prove whether “ Mr. Stephens ”
he right in his admonitory warnings
now or not—to this test, and the ar
bitrament of the great future be sub
mits all he says or writes, a. u. s.

PATRICK HENRY'S GRANDSON.
The Cincinnati Chronicle in mak
ing the statement that the grandson
of Patrick Henry had lately died in
the menial capacity of treasury
watchman at Washington city, asks
sneeringly, “Would it not have shown
in Congress as green a remembrance
of ancestral devotion to the country
to have mellowed his later life with
pension, as well as that of John
Tyler’s rebel daughter?”
As a question of justice as to the
claims of Patrick Henry’s grandson
and “John Tyler's rebel daughter,’
upon the bounties of the nation, we
do net see that the other queetion ae
to which side either party sympa
thized in the late war has anything
to do with the matter. Now that all
the people of this country are one
people, living under and obeying the
•am* government, we do net see the
justice of making sectional distinc
tions, based npon Hatreds of the late
war, in diepensing national charity,
It is just such stuff as the Chroni
cle’s question that keep up the asperi
ties of the late war between the two
sections.
