The following intelligence was
this day received fiom Bombay, dated January ri, ijSi:
That it havin ’ been revived to lay siege to Bafan, on the
coast of Mil abar, Gen. GoddArd, with the forces under
his command, with great difficulty completed his march
from Surat so as to arrive before the pla>.e on the 13th of
November, where He was joined by reinforcements and
stores from Bombay.’ The General, finding it very firing,
and defended by a numerous garrifrtn, under the command
of Vifagc'e Punt, determined to cany on his operations
with regularity and precaution.. On the 28th in the m it*
ning he had corripleated a battery of fix guns nnd'fix mir- a,
tars, within qdb vitrds of the place, and Hinder cov,rr of the
fir#- carried on his approaches to the spot, where he-drifted
the grand battery dfnine 24 pounders, which was opened

compleated, a mefiage was sent from the fort, offering to

The garrison marched out and laid down their arms in
front of the fort, being allowed only to carry away their
own private efitcbs. It adds greatly To the (itisfaeV:oil
which this important acquisition gives, that the Toss we
sustained is very small, one officer only, Lieut. Sir John
James Gordon, who# h i"ing,hegn woua • !, i% fiace dead,
sr.d about li men killed and wounded, of whom four 0n1y..,,
v.ere Europeans. A considerable quantity of ammunition
was found in the fort, 220 pieces of cannon and i cbrafs
nortars, of which 19 pieces of brass cannon, several of 4
very la;ge calibre, 12? pieces of the iron ordnance, and
all the mortars, Have been reported fervicsable.

have the fatisfatlion to acquaint your Lor .ihip that one of

duty of five per cent, was proposed, but the greatly dif*
trelled, reduced, and exhausted fine of the province, it

South Seas cxprcls, but threw all their papers overboard ■

SIR J. B. Warren, Bart. Member for Marlpvv, was
yesterday ■appointed to the command ofMiis Majesty’s
frigate tiie Ariadne, from his Majesty’s /loop Merlin.
His M.ijefty’s (hip the Conqueror, at Plymouth, hav
ing undergone~a repair, is put into ebmmlifion, and the
comm uid of her given to Capt. Bal/Lur, late of the Cul
loden.

from land, in company, with 32 fail of merchantmen, un
der convoy of four men of war, they fell In with seven foil
of French ffiips; the Commodore immediately hoisted the
figna! to disperse, but the Captain of the brig fays he four
