was Sir Hugh Pailifer’aCaptain, when, in the Formidable,
he eminently diftingui/hed himfelf in the adfion off the
coast of France, on the 27th of July, 177S J from Bremer
Lee, in Germany, after a paf&ge of 95 days, with the
Oflriche and Britannia armed /hips, and 23 fail of trans
ports, having on board 2988 Germatt officers and privates,
Ac. Sec. They took on the paffuge a /hip belonging to
Newbury Port in New England, bouna to France, loaded
with filh and lumber, and retook a brig from Glasgow to
New-York, both arrived.
Also t his day arrived the celebrated Rebel frigate nam
ed th? Trumbull, of 32 guns, after an engagement jvith
his Majesty’s /hip Irk, also of guns, commanded by
Capt, -Ravvfon,with coo ‘barrels of freih Philadelphia
flour and bread on board, bound to Cape Francois. The
1 rumbull loft three men killed and five wounded : Before
the adlion, which lasted upwards of an hour, /he loft her
fore-topnaft in a gale of wind. Capt. James Nicholfbn,
commander of the Trdmbull, had been deceived by infor
mation, as he came down the Delaware, that the Briti/h
cruizers were to the foutbufard, which occasioned his
i-pg so the northward, where the Iris was ranging and fell
in witji her in the night. Three more prizes are sent in

Sept. 5. On Friday the 24th ult. a body of Rebels,
supported by feme continental horse, made an incutfion
--St. Thomas's pari a ; a party of them came down to
Daniel s If! and, and plundered the plantation of Mrs Ilf,
a widow, breaking and r.vn the /enter and turning their
horses into her corn fi Id. They then went to Mr. Lef
fefne s plantation, on whheff Mr. Balfour (a gentleman
\t no had fled from his po/Teffions in the back country on
account ot his loyalty) lived ; luckily he was in town, but
t.i-y plundered and destroyed all hi- effects they could find.
Capt. M’Niel, who commands the Briti/h Wappc
tav., having received intelligence of their proceedings, de
tached a subaltern, with a fmclf party of infantry and ca
valry, consisting of regulars and a few volimtcer militia, to
intercept those freebooters on their return; and in the
night they e rrre tin with a party 0/ the Rebels, then com
manded by a Cap*. Benner, an at
Wells s plantation on Bull-head; our party had nearly se
cured Eennet and his gang, but nhfortuirately the

under the command of Lieut. Col. de Borck, having ef
