MISCELLANY.
KEY’D GEORGE WH1TEFIELO. I
The following anecdotes relative to this
extraordinary man, are from the Life and
"Writings of l)r. B. Franklin, lately publish
ed in England.
“ In 1739, arrived among ns from Ireland,
the reverend Mr. Whitefield, % lio lmd made
himself remarkable there as an itinerant
preacher. lie was at first permitted to preach
in some of our churches ; but the clergy ta
king a dislike to him, soon refused him their
pulpits, and he was obliged to .preach in the
fields. The multitude of all sorts and de
nominations that attended his sermons were
enormous, and it was a matter of spec illation
tome (who was one of the number) to ob
serve the extraordinary influence of his ora
tory on his hearers ; and how much they ad
mired and respected him, notwithstanding
liis common abuse of them, by assuring them,
they, were naturally half blasts and half
devils. It was wondefu! to see the change
soon made in the manners of our inhabitants.
From being thoughtless or indifferent about
religion, it seemed us if all the world were
growing religious, so that one could not walk
through the town in an evening without hear
ing psalms sung in different families of ev
ery street. And it being found inconvenient
to assemble in the open air, subject to its
inclemencies, the building of a house to meet
in, was no sooner proposed, and persons ap
pointed to receive contributions, but suffici
ent sums were soon received to procure the
ground and erect the building, which was
one hundred feet long and seventy broad ;
and the work was carried on with such spirit
as to be finished in a much shorter time than
could have been expected. Both house and
ground were vested in trustees, expressly
for the use of anij preacher of any religious
persuasion, who might desire to say some
thing to the people of Philadelphia. The
design in building not being to hcconunodate
any particular sect, bin the inhabitants in
general; so that even if the mufti of Con
stantinople were to send a missionary to
preach Mahometanism to us, he would find a
pulpit at his service.
Mr. Whitcfieltl, on leaving us, went preach
ing all the way through the colonies to
Georgia. The settlement of that province
had lately been begun, but instead of being
made with hardy industrious husbandmen
accustomed to labor, the only people fit for
such an enterprise, it was with families of
broken simp keepers, and other insolvent
filled with his licaiVrs to a considerable dis
tance : being among the hindmost in Market
street, I had the curiosity to learn how lar
he could be heard, by retiring backwards
down the street towards the river, and I
found his voice distinct tHl I came near Front
street, when some noise in that street ob
scured it. Imagine then a semicircle, ol
which my distance should be the radius, and
that it. was fiHod with auditors, to each ol
whom 1 allowed two square feet; 1 computed
that lie might well be heard by more than
thirty thousand. This reconciled me to the
newspaper accounts of bis having preached
to twenty-five thousand people in the fields,
and to the history of generals haranguing
whole armies, of which I had sometimes
doubted.
By hearing him often I came to distin
guish easily between sermons newly com
posed, and" those which he had often preach
ed in the course, of his travels, llis delivery
of the latter was so improved by frequent
repetition, that every accent, every emphasis,
every modulation of voice, was so perfectly
well-placed, that without being interested in
the subject, one. could not help being pleased

taken out of the jails, who being set down in
the woods, unqualified for clearing laud, and
nimble to endure the hardships of a new set
tlement, perished in numbers, leaving many
helpless children unprovided for. The sight
of their miserable situation inspired the be
nevolent heart of Mr. Whitefield, with the
idea of building an orphan-house there, in
which they might lie supported and cdtr at.-d.
lieturning northward, he preached np this
charity, and made large collections : for Ins
eloquence had a wonderful power over tile
hearts and purses of his hearers, of which 1
myself was an instance. 1 did not disapprove
of the design, bu< as Georgia was then des
titute of materials and workman, and it was
proposed to send them from Philadelphia at
a great expense, 1 thought it would have
been better to have built tlte house at l’liila*
defphia, and brought the children to it. This
I advised, but he was resolute in his first
project, rejected my counsel, and 1 there
fore refused to contribute. 1 happened suon
after to attend one of his sermons, in the
course of which, I perceived lie intended to
finish with a collection, and 1 silently resolved
he should get nothing from me : 1 had in
in y pocket a handful of copper-money, three
or four silver dollars, and live pistols in gold ;
*is he proceeded 1 began to soften, and con
cluded to give the clipper. Another stroke
of his oratory made ine ashamed of that, and
determined me to give the silver, and lie
finished so admirably, that 1 emptied my
pocket wholly into the collector’s dish, gold
and all! At this sermon there was also one
of our club, who being of my sentiments
respecting the building in Georgia, and sus
pecting a collection might be intended, bad
by precaution emptied his pockets before lie
came from borne ; towards the conclusion of
the discourse, however, he felt a strong incli
nation to give, and applied to a neighbor
'who stood near him, to lend him some money
for the purpose. The request was fortunate
ly made to perhaps the only matin the com
pany who had the firmness not to be ailbeted
by the preacher. His answer was, « At any
other time, friend Hopkinson, 1 would lend In
thee freely ; but not now, for thee seems to me
to he out of thy right senses.’
The last time I saw Mr. Whitefield, was
in London, when lie consulted me about his
orphan bouse concern, and Ids purpose ot
appropriating it to the establishment of a
college.
He had aloud and clear voice, anti articu
lated bin words so perfectly that he might
be heard tuid understood at a great distance;
especially as his auditorl* observed the
most perfect silence. He preached one eve
ning from the top of the court house steps,
which are in the middle of Market-street,
and on the west side of Second-street, whit h
crosses it at i i^ht angles. Both streety were
canid ;—to saj nothing more of the station
which lie holds in this most illustrious group—
that of the philanthropists. In studying his
character and writings, with Xenophon's
Memorabilia before us, we could alums!
credit the transmigration of souls ; so perfect
! is the congeniality between him aud Socra-
1 tes. But we leave (iiis topic, as well as those
of his literary merits, and of his particular
claims to the gratitude of America, for the
O'Cttsion which will he a (lorded by the third
volume of his Memoirs.”
