The Columbus Tragedy.
We have received several dispatches and letters from
Columbus, detailing the hoarible events that have trans
pired there the present week, but have room only
for a simple statemeut of the facts, as we have been
able to gather them from the contradictory and con
fused accounts that have reached us.
A Slave Jarrctt, property of Mr. Douglass, was
tried more than a year ago, for the crime of rapt up
on a white girl of nine years of age, and convicted.
An appeal was taken to the Supreme Court, and a
new trial granted. At the second trial in June last,
the same result ensued and the slave was sentenced to
be hung on the 12th inst. A short time previously
there was a petition gotten up by tome of the citizens
for a pardon of the culprit and a trusty and energet
ic messenger was despatched to Millegeville to see Gov.
Towns. This mission was successful and the messen
ger, on his return to Macon, telegraphed home the
fact.
On this intelligence being received at Columbus,
there was great excitement among the people. Meet
ings were held and speeches delivered calling down
vengeance upon Gov. Towns for pardoning the negro,
and a determination evinced to disregard the mandate
and hang the criminal at any and every hazard.
Accordingly the Jail was well guarded on Monday
night and all day Tuesday till near the hour of four
o’clock, when the mob broke into the prison, took out
Jarrett and hung him till he was dead, in the presence
of thousands of people!
Concerning so horrible a tragedy we have but a word
of comment. We think that the petitioners for the
pardon of the boy, after two fair and impartial trials
and two convictions, were sadly in error as to their du
ty, and Gov. Towns is highly culpable for listening to
their entreaties. Rut all this did not justify a resort to
mob laus and to tho tragical and bloody denoument
which has occurred ! It will boa sad day for this re
public when the Cini itu onal authorities of the land
are over-ridden by popu’ar clamor and outrage, and
mob-rule gains the ascendency. From such unbridled
license nothing good can be expected, even in those
extreme cases where the laws are useless to punish th :
guilty or shield the innocent.
Sympathy.— The Savannah Georgian says
there is scarcely- a man living to whom the
South owes a heavier debt of obligation than
to Elwood Fisher, the senior editor of the
Southern Press, It is great pity that the editor
of the Georgian, and all of like kidney, do not
belong to Fisher, soul and gizzard, and have
not a country to inhabit, where the names of
Washi igton and his compatriots were as odious
as they desire. Elwood Fisher, an abolitionist
of the meanest kind—one who has sweltered
in his woolens through the dogdays merely be
cause cotton is grown by negroes, has became
a great favorite with some folks. And uhyis
he now entitled to the obligation of the South?
For his services as editor of the Southern Press.
And what has that paper steadily advocated
since its establishment? A DISSOLUTION
OF THE UNION. It is therefore entitled to
the gratitude of the Georgian, of Mr. McDonald,
and the Abolitionists of the North.—Atlanta
Reupblican.
From the Louisville Democrat.
The columns of the press throughout the country
seem to filled with notices of cures and specifies for all
diseases that flesh is heir to, that one scarcely knows
what to do in ease of disease, for fear that in using one
medicine, another and better may be overlooked. But
from the remarkable cures, high order, and vast a
mount of testimony daily brought under our personal
notice, of the extraordinary efficacy of Dr. Rogers’ Liv
erwort and Tar, we are compelled to regard the evi
dence of our senses, nnd confidently state that for Colds
and Coughs, and that hydra-headed monster Consump
tion, we think this preparation a safe, speedy and cer
tain cure. At all events we may say to our friends—
try it. Seoadveit sernent. Aug. 16th.

DR.C. MrDON ALn would respectfully inform the citizens
of Macon, and the surrounding country, that he has as

GF.R, late of Wilmington. Delaware.
Dr. Gali.aokr has had many years experience in the Man
ufacture of Artificial Teeth, and comes highly recommended
for his skill and taste in getting them up either in Blocks nr
Single, with or without Gums, so adapted in shape, size and
color, as to suit every variety of case.
As they have the advantage of all the new and valuable
improvements appertaining to the profession, either patent or
otherwise, they feel authorised in promising the people of
Georgia, a style of work far superior to any that has yet been
executed in this Country.
I)r. Gam.aokr has been very successful in thcadministra
tion of Chloric Ether for the relief of pain in extracting teeth,
and in the Surgical operations of Hospital, as well as private
practice in New Orleans, Philadelphia, &c. &c. and he pro
poses to use it here, when desired, or cases my require it.
He has a preparation for filling doubtful teeth, by the use
of which many are saved, that would otherwise be lost.
Those wishing temporary sets of Teeth, can have them pre
pared and set, as soon as the inflamation from extracting sub
