Diamond Take Lead In With A 5-0 Record
By A.W. Dorsey
Sports Writer
The Trojans of Head Coach
Jeff Bailey knew that this
weekend was a big one for the
team.
Going into this week we were
tied for the region lead with
Perry and Cairo. We were 3
0 and Perry and Cairo were
each at 2-0. Peach was to
play Perry on Friday and Cairo
on Saturday. The handwriting
on the wall was easy to read.
Whoever came out on top in
these two contests would be in
the driver’s seat for the region
crown. As it turned out, when
the weekend was over, Peach
was alone at the top with a 5-0
region mark, with Cairo at 3-1
and Perry at 2-1. Peach took
both games, beating Perry 10-6
and Cairo 4-3. The region race
looks like this: Peach 5-0, Cairo
and Westover 3-1 and Perry
brings up the fourth slot at 2-1.
The first game of the week,
on Tuesday with Monroe in
Albany, was postponed by the
rains that swept Georgia this
week. Because this is a region
game it will have to be made up
at a later date.
In the Perry game the
Panthers struck first when
Brock Daughtry lined a long
home run, putting the Panthers
up 1-0 in the bottom of the
second inning. Peach came
back in the top of the third with
four runs to take a 4-1 lead.

Lady Trojans Basketball
Awards Update
Even though it is about three
weeks away, we want to go
ahead and tell you that the
Trojans and Lady Trojans
basketball award ceremony will
be held on April 23, 2009 at the
cafeteria at Peach County High
School. Starting time will be
6:30 p.m. The cost will be $6
with the first of his two home
runs to pace the Trojans to a
6-1 lead. Perry regrouped and
got two back in the bottom of
the fourth, cutting the lead to
6-3. Each team tallied a run in
the fifth and Peach got a single
run in the sixth while Byrd was
holding back the Panthers, now
trailing 8-4. Byrd again led
off sixth the inning and - do

action, the tandem of Desmond

event.
Come and honor our Trojans
and Lady Trojans on their suc¬
cessful 2008-2009 season.
We ran this information last
week but there has been an
addition to the festivities since
last week and we want to make
it known to you, especially those
that followed Lady Trojan bas¬
ketball back in the early 1980's
and 1990;s. There will be a
jersey retirement ceremony for
two former Lady Trojan players.
These two young ladies was
Kim Oates and Natalie White.
Oates was a standout for the
Lady Trojans from 1981-1985
and went on to play for the Lady
Wildcats at FVSU. She wore

County. Natalie White played

1991 and then went on'to play at

hit his second homer of the

Taylor Howell and a sacrifice
by Walker led to Justin Harper
adding an insurance run for the
Trojans to go into the final at

10-4. Perry managed a couple
of scores in the seventh but it
was too little, too late. Byrd’s

Trojans JV Beats Westside
in Baseball Action
With everything going on
we have not had an opportu¬
nity to watch the Trojans Junior
Varsity baseball team in action
this season. We did go to Jones
County back in March but that
game was postponed and we got
over to Northside but that game
too was not played. We did
manage to catch them in action
up in Macon against the JV
team of Westside and this writer
was impressed. They are better
than their record indicates.
Hunter Flournoy was on the
mound for the Junior Trojans
and pitched well. He carried a
game open, but we left the
bases loaded when the third out
was matte. Byrd opened the
inning getting hit by a pitch,
followed by a walk to Taylor
Howell. Walker and Pike then
both got infield hits to drive
in the two runs. Peach led
now 3-0 and Walker was having
his way with the Syrupmakers.
When they got base runners,
he managed to pitch his way
out of trouble. Cairo got their
first hit off the left-hander in
the fifth inning. Cairo got their
first run in the sixth and added
two in the seventh without
benefit of a base hit. The first
two batters for Cairo in the
seventh were easy outs on fly
balls and then the wheels began
to come unloose. Two walks
and three hit batters allowed
two Syrupmakers to cross home
plate. Matt Nettles retired the
final out on a strikeout with
ihe bases loaded. Peach had
survived a scare, winning this
one 4-3. As someone said after
the game, “some wins are pretty
and some are not,” but we will
take them any way we can.
Peach is now 9-5 overall •
and 5-0 in region action. This
week we were scheduled to
go to Albany on Tuesday to
take on Dougherty County.
On Wednesday it is Westover
coming to Anderson Field for
the second game of the series.
Then we take the rest of the
week off until April 14, when
we go to Sylvester to take on
Worth County.
hitting backed up his complete
game victory.
The game Saturday was just
as exciting as the Perry game.
Peach opened the scoring in
this one, putting a run on the
board in the bottom of the first
inning. Peach strung three
singles together with the run
scoring on the third hit. In the
second, we added two more
and had a chance to blow the
matches at the crossover, and
in doing so nailed down the #2
seed for the upcoming SIAC
Tennis Championships that will
be held in Atlanta.
Leading the way in singles
play was freshman Roberta
Robinson. Robinson posted a
4-1 record during the crossover.
no-hitter into the fourth inning
against a good-hitting Seminole
team and wound up going the
distance for the win. Peach
went up 1-0 in the third and
then in the fifth strung together
several base hits for three runs
to up the lead to 4-0 going
into the bottom of the fifth.
Westside got two runs in the
bottom of the fifth courtesy of
the generosity of the umpires.
Flournoy’s no-hitter was erased
on the official sewer’s judge¬
ment on a couple of plays that
were definitely errors and not
hits. Peach added an insurance
run in the top of the seventh
to lead 5-2 with the Seminoles
coming to bat for the final time.
Flournoy dosed the deal, getting
the last two outs on strikeouts.
Peach had a game rained out
on March 28 and one on April 1.
No word yet on make up dates.
