Rules For Playoffs
The first four games of the season are now history... and
the Forsyth County Bulldogs should be 4-0, but they are 2-2.
The Bulldogs opened their season with a 35-22 victory over
Gilmer County at home. They took to the road for two games
and lost to Lumpkin County 10-0 and to North Hall 27-26.
They came home Friday night and won their 1980 homecom
ing game, 17-7.
They had better be ready,' Friday night they start their
season. The first four games were for fun, the next six are
for keeps. Henderson, Tucker, Clarke Central, Johnson,
Habersham Central and Dunwoody are on the slate for the
remaining games and they, all join the Bulldog’s in the 8-
AAAA north sub-region.
Early season strategy said that the Bulldogs would easily
win their first four games and then play hard football during
the next six and pull for a .500 or winning season. The tables
have turned. To have a winning season they must win four of
their next six games and if they can pull that feat off they
should make plans for the sub-region playoffs.
Following Friday night’s game head coach Jim Cooper
told the Bulldog’s to remember their goal, “to make the
playoffs.” The Bulldogs must follow a few simple rules to
achieve their goal.
For this reason, I have acquired a dusty old book from the
back shelves of the Forsyth County Library entitled, “Rules
for Making Playoffs.”
Rule number one: Enter every game knowing that you will
win the game. If you ever underrate yourself you’ll weaken
your desire to win.
Rule number two: Don’t look back at yesterday. Forget
that you allowed a team from Dahlonega to shut you out or a
team you should have destroyed to beat you by one point.
Look ahead.
Rule number three: Don’t analyze your problems, but
count your assets. Be glad you have a tall quarterback, a
powerful running back, a back averaging over 100 yards per
game, a solid defense and a lot of character.
Rule number four: Respect your coaches. Big deal if you
hate the ground they walk on because you don’t get to play.
You can be more valuable to your team adding encourage
ment on the sidelines than you may be able to on the field.
Rule number five: Keep smiling. Smile when you walk off
the field, smile when you they tackle you, laugh when you
tackle them. An opposing team doesn’t want you to have fun
on the field and it will unnerve them if you do.
The Forsyth County Bulldogs have what it takes to win
some of their region games. They are in this region because
they should be. They are not in this region because they are
mismatched. They have an equal chance at the top and if
they are smart they will take it. There is always room for an
underdog, but you are only the underdog when you recognize
the fact.
Forget that you are 2-2, when you should be 4-0. You have
to start all over now. When the season is over the last six
games are the ones to count.
Good luck Bulldogs, from the camera and myself.
P. S. Yes, Mark Grogan, 40, you are a key to the specialty
team. Yes, Kris Stone, 18, you do hold the ball well for Todd
Yates.

The Forsyth County Bull

night and continued their
winning steak at Forsyth
County Stadium, as they de
feated the Rabun County
Wildcats 17-7 before a sol
dout homecoming game.
The Wildcats, 1-2, were
dominated by the Forsyth
County defensive unit
throughout the night as the
Bulldogs held the Wildcats
to less than 100 yards total
offense.
Bulldog tailback Kelly
Winter carried the ball 25
times for 148 yards, averag
ing 5.9 yards per carry and
continued averaging almost
110 yards per game for the

The game opened with Ra
bun County electing to re
ceive after winning the toss.
Quarterback Joey McKay,
a 165-pound junior, carried
the ball two plays and then a
fumbled occurred with Bull
dog lineman Donnie Wilson
recovering on the wildcat 38-
yard line.
Bulldog quarterback Mark
Shirley then entered the
game and began moving the
Forsyth County offense.
Shirley passed to Steve Rog
ers for a first down and then
Kelly Winter carried to the
Wildcat five-yard-line. The
Rabun County defense
locked horns at the five and
held the Bulldogs for three
downs.
Todd Yates, the Bulldogs
placekicker, booted a 16-
yard field goal with 8:10 left
in the quarter and the Bull
dogs were in front, 3-0.
Rabun County made an
unsuccessful attempt to
drive the football and after
taking the punt, Forsyth
County again rolled. Winter
carried three downs and
moved the ball almost 40
yards to the Wildcat 20-yard
line. Shirley carried eight
yards to the one-yard-line
before Steve Rogers
slammed the ball in the end
zone for the score. Yates
kicked the P.A.T. with 2:04
remaining in the quarter
and the Bulldogs led early
10-0.
Rabun County scored in
the third quarter with 3:59
remaining on a score that
was set up by a pass inter
ception. Lewis Talley inter
cepted a Shirley pass and
carried to the Wildcat 43-
yard line.
A pass to tight end John
Bradshaw from quarterback
McKay and a late hit call
moved the ball to the Bull
dog 22-yard line. McKay
then hit Lewis Talley on a
touchdown pass to put the
Wildcats on the board. Har
old Grant kicked the P. A.T.
good and the score stood at
10-7.
The game was placed on
ice when, with 11:26 remain
ing in the game, Winter
raced 25-yards for a Bulldog
touchdown. Yates kicked the
point after and the final
score stood at 17-7, Bulldogs.
