Gause to hold Dec. 12
hometown book signing
Damon Clause Jr. will hold a special book signing
on Sunday, Dec. 12, from 2-4 p.m. “The War Journal
of Major Damon ‘Rocky’ Gause” will be featured at
the Crawford W. Long Museum in Jefferson.
The war journal is the story by Gause’s father of
his adventures in escaping from the Japanese during
World War 11. including the escape from the Bataan
Death March and from Corregidor after its fall as
well as the 3,200-mile escape across the Pacific with
only a hand-held compass to guide them.
Rocky Gause had left the account of that escape in
a manuscript to his son more than 50 years ago
before he was sent to the European theatre where he
was killed. A few years ago, the son decided to have
his father's manuscript published. The book’s movie
rights have been sold and Gause has been on a
national book tour.
Copies of the book will be sold at the signing for

Christmas at the Holly with
song and theater event
Members of the Holly Theatre Company will sing
Christmas songs and the Holly children’s Theatre
Company members will present a one-act version of
Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol" on Saturday,
Dec. 4, at 8 p.m. and Sunday, Dec. 5, at 2 p.m. These
“Little Dickens" are designing their own costumes
and have some special effects. Tickets are $7 for
adults and $4 for students and children. Tickets can
be purchased with a credit card by calling (706) 864-
0161 noon-5 p.m. All seats are reserved.
In addition, auditions will be held Jan. 8 from 10
a.m. to 5 p.m. and Jan. 9 from 1-5 p.m. at the Holly
Theatre for “Guys and Dolls.” Callbacks will be
Monday, Jan. 10 and the production runs March JO
-25. Prepare a short, upbeat song and be prepared to
dance at the audition. There are no paid roles. Bring
a photo of yourself and a resume, if you have one.

‘Trade-a-Toy’ at Zany
Brainy and help spread the
word about violence
Zany Brainy is sponsoring “Trade-a-Toy" through
Dec. 24. Zany Brainy teams up with The Lion & the
Lamb Project to convey the message that “violence
is not child’s play."
The goal is to provide toys, media and activities
that encourage a child's sense of wonder and imagi
nation. Kids will bring in their violent toys and sign

Sleighbell Tour of B&B Inns
to be held in Dahlonega
On Sunday, Dec. 12, from 1-5 p.m. there will be a
self-guided tour of local inns, each decorated and
loaded with holiday refreshments. (Blueberry Inn,
Royal Guard Inn, Worley Homestead, Lily Creek
Lodge and Mountain Top Lodge). Tickets are avail
able at the Dahlonega-Lumpkin County Chamber of
Commerce Welcome Center or at participating
B&B's. Admission is $lO.
‘Norman Rockwell: Pictures
for the American People’
An exciting array of programs and education
resources geared toward children, families and
teachers highlight the High Museum of Art’s pre
sentation of “Norman Rockwell: Pictures for the
American People.”
Programs for adult audiences include an American
art history course and a January lecture on Rockwell
by exhibition curator Anne Knutson. For children
and their parents, the High has organized a museum
school outreach program for Atlanta-area art stu
dents in grades 9-12, special holiday programs and
regular Toddler Thursdays, Saturday workshops and
Sunday studios based on Rockwell themes.
With the Norman Rockwell Museum at
Stockbridge, the High has developed a Web site for
the national tour designed by Mind Spring
Enterprises Inc. (www.rockwelltour.org), a Family
Guide pamphlet and three separate audio tours
for adults, families and Spanish speakers.

‘Smooth Jazz Christmas’
concert to be held Dec. 9
The Tabernacle will heat up a cool winter evening
w ith the seductive sounds of David Koz, David
Benoit and others at the “Smooth Jazz Christmas"
concert Thursday. Dec. 9.
Headlining this sizzling act for its third successful
year. David Koz brings his melodic sax to the
Tabernacle for the first time. Koz’s most recent
accomplishments include his latest release titled
“The Dance" where he collaborated with influential
greats Burt Bacharach, Luther Vandross. Beße
Winans and Montell Jordan.
Joining Koz is celebrated contemporary jazz artist
David Benoit. Known for his groundbreaking piano
playing, Benoit says of his music, “I’m always try
ing to take the flavors of all I’ve done in the past
and bring them to a higher level ... that’s the fun of
it.”
Warming up the stage for this Tabernacle produc
tion are singer/songwriter Brenda Russell and
acoustic guitarist Peter White. Best known for her
Grammy-nominated hit “Piano in the Dark,” Russell
also composed songs for Chaka Khan, Joe Cocker,
Dionne Warwick. Regina Belle and Donna Summer.
White’s recent release titled “Perfect Moment.”
includes his smooth melodies and -distinctive
sound.
Opening acts will take The Tabernacle stage at 8

Writers’ concert dedicated
to late Celestine Sibley
In hopes of becoming an annual North Georgia
tradition and patterned after the highly success
ful Atlanta Writers in Concert, the Georgia
Society of Writers in Concert will be presented
Thursday evening. Dec. 9, at 7 p.m. at the Tate
Elementary School auditorium in . The concert
is being dedicated to the late Celestine Sibley,
noted Atlanta writer and columnist and a fre
quent participant in Atlanta Writers in Concert
presentations.
This year’s concert will be presented in one act
and will feature five well known writers from
North Georgia reading excerpts from their pub
lished works. Sibley Fleming, author of “How to
Rock Your Baby” and the granddaughter of
Celestine Sibley, will be one of the featured
writers in concert and will present a persona)
tribute to Miss Sibley.
Admission to this year’s concert is a 10-pound
(or more) bag of nonperishable food per person.
The filled bag is to be brought to the concert and
will serve as admission to the concert. For more

Exhibit features collections
from the Civil War
A new exhibit at the Greensboro Historical Museinn
includes more than 140 Confederate firearms and the',
story of their design and manufacture.
“Through Collectors' Eyes: Treasures of the Civil
War” features weapons from the collection of Dr. 3nH
Mrs. John M. Murphy. The couple collected manJ-oC
the finest and rarest firearms used by soldiers of the
Confederacy.
Confederate weapons made in Guilford County,' '•
N.C., Fayetteville, N.C., Richmond, Va., New
Orleans, La., Texas, Georgia and Tennessee are
included. ' ' ’
“Through Collectors’ Eyes: Treasures of the civil
War” also incorporates artwork by contemporary ' 1
artist Don Troiani, as well as a variety of other histor
ical prints and engravings. ''
The exhibit and the Greensboro Historical Museum
are open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5
p.m. and Sunday from 2-5 p.m. Admission is free.
The museum, accredited by the American
Association of Museums, is located at 130 Summit
Avenue in downtown Greensboro, N.C.. For more
