POET R Y.

On HAPPINESS.
i f* «• * ■/ t . ■- ' 1 ;.-•
WHAT can that be which men content
ment name ?
Sore ’tis foine bubble of wide-fotfnding fame;
Or *tis some fiction of a poet’s rriiud,
CJr golden picture to allure mankind ;
An empty pomp, which men far distant view*
Which in enjoyment ho one ever knew;
Or mere chimera of a madman’s brain,
Which none e’er can, but all (till wilh to
gain.
Or what is that which earthly bliss they call ?
A thing all aim at, yet there’* none at alb
’Tis ti'he, fotne near to this fond with arrive;
’ Bnthaman life no perfect bliss can give.
When fide fortune on us traufient darts
Her fmiliug beams, joy elevates our hearts :
We think ourselves one moment happy men,
Another moment wretched quit£ again*
And fay,’twa* better fortune ne’er had fmil’d,
Than we thus, by her wheedlirfg charms be
gujl’d. v /t
Th* vexing fear* cf losing what Vpe ve gain’d,
The cursed thifft of more than yet obtain’d,
Both break, diftraft, and banilh all our reft,—
Tho* blif* attends the man of wealth poftefs’d.
Whilst man is nurtur’d in his infant years,
Moil happy then, must fed forhe painful fears,
Tho 1 he, in that so innocent a : state,
Kor knows, nor withes ever to' be great.
Yet just as baubles, toys, and trinkets please,
Bo disappointments rob him of his ease.
And a<> his years, so his ambition grows,
Aiming at what he truly never knows.;
Yet still, no doubt, has happindfs in view,
Nor e’er delays the blessings to purlut.
Wheu manhood’s power invigorates the heart,
y.jce has its pains, and pleafuve v has its smart;
Whose fpecidus cliafms ne’er fait t’attrad bia
tyi*
And make him from the path of vitfne fly;
At least their dazzling hCauties dim his fight,
And make him somewhat deviate from the
, right.
These—these must still all happiness destroy,
And caufc him grieve where he expected joy.
What then is age f A multitude of cares 1
A heap of woes, infirmities and fears 1
It comes ;o warn his glal's is nearly run,
glided in woes, as it in woes begun y
Hc then finks down into the peaceful grave,’
To meet that bliss he ne’er on earth could
have.
