POET R Y.
SfiSOOCS^OWSfi
The following beautiful rlefcrintion of the
American MFI.ITIA —the pride—the 0-
. entity, and glory of our country, is ex
tracted from a Poem, written by a Bosto
nian, called the Retrofptfl.
The AMERICAN MILITIA.
** art excites, nor martial music’s
XAI charms,
The foldicr’s foul to deeds of glory warms,
Nor hostile arms emblaze the pompful plain,
Nor guards their naked front the brazen train,
Untutor’d thefc in war’s experienc’d school,
By nature brave and unoblig’d by rule,
Their fable arms est botne in fields of chafe,
In hostile port their manly (boulders grace,
Their martial hands the lleely tomax wield.
Thus arm’d, thy sons, Columbia , take the
field.
No groan of slavery wounds the warrior’s
ear,
No guilt pollutes them, and no scourge they
fear,
Nor fcornful eye, nor mean imperious dare,
Insult the spirit of these Cons of war,
The Chief, the soldier each familiar greet,
Share the fame cup, nor tafie diftinguifli*d
meat,
One village bore them, and one tutor bred,
Aud to the field one glorious motive led.”'
ANECDOTE.
A Well-known person, of an odd
turn of humour, riding a
horfc-back, near Bath, (England)
happened to meet another equal to
him ft If, in a lane so narrow that
neither could pass without one giv
ing way, which neither would do.
Both a halty orrd nu» « /iiigtc
word was spoken until the firft men
tioned, deliberately pulled a newl
paper out of his pecker, and began
reading ir to himlelf, with the utmost
compolure, when the other, deter
mined to prove an equal degree of
patience and obstinacy, leifurly took
a pinch of fnuff, and ver/ gravely
accosted him, M Sir, when you have
done with that paper, I shall be glad
to look at it,’* which so pleased the
humorist, that he immediately pulled
off his fpe&acles, and feixed him by
the hand, declaiing at the fame time,
that tc he should go home and cine
with him.”
