The huckster’s Ordinance.
' The chairman of the Market Cotn
'‘Hftee presented an ordinance to
t e City ( ouncil for its approval which
s is plain and unequivocal legislation
■•gainst one of the poore-t cla-ses of
bivannah spe pie, the hucksters. The
• prop 'Bed ordinance will not only work
hardship and suffering among this poor
but very useful people, but it will, if it
siould be approved by council, become
a somce of gieat nnnovauce tojiouse
keepers, by forcing them to go to the
g« n ral market which is situated from
a half mile to one mile and a had fr m
the residences of a majority of our citi
zens, tor ti e common but necessary ar
tides of food now brought to their
doors early every morning by the
enterprising hucksters.
Besides the foregoing whois it that
is bold enough to siy that if the ordin
ance shou'd pass it will not increase the
cost of living among st ven eighths of the
people? The idea of placing such
articles as green corn, okra, tomatoes,
peas, potatoes, etc,, in the hands of a
few monopolists, who will compel! the
masses to go to the general market lor
them, or do without, would be absurd
wore it not -in outrage.
It is to b • hoped • hat our ‘‘city fath
ers ’ will reflect well before passing the
ordinance to harass, atiuoy, and injure
the people.

Yellowstone Kit is all the rage in
Savannah at present. Ile holds forth
on the corner of Liberty and Price
streets and has a congregation of
several thousand every night. Kit
is a doctor, he is a preacher, he is a
stump speaker, he is a puzzle. He
brings everybody to him. The
young and the old, the rich and the
poor—especially the poor —go to
Kit every night. Men, women and
children are seen nightly with chairs,
boxes and benches, hurrying to see
and to hear Kit. The churches.are
deserted and Kit has done it all.
The people would rather hear Kit's
plain talk than to hear the preachers
preach. Dr. Kit sells medicine and
gives away money, diamond rings,
clothing and food. He was poor
once but claims to be a millionaire
