' derous attack -m the night of June 30.
Old man Antb ny Givens and Jeff
Waters has recovered. Richard Pinck
ney, the third and mo-t unfortunate
will soon be able to go home. Pinck
ney’s case e-pe-ijly de- rv-s the sym
pathy of all friends of law and order,
and the attention of the grand jury, He
is a paralytic, having lost the use of his
right arm entirely. It is painful to ex
pect that any argument before a c run
of justice will succeed in clearing the
criminals who made such an atrocious
and murderous assault upon this poor
and helpless boy. The recent improve
ments have added greatly to the com*
forts and conveniences of the patients
and also to the general appeal anee of
the institution. The abundant supply
of water and excellent sewerage serve tn
remove entirely all the offal from the
premi-es and greatly improving its,sani
tary needs. It is proposed to turn over
to the colored people the management ol
the Infirmary. This is a move in the
right direction and there is no doubt
that a coloied board of manage)s, can
manage an institution as well as a white
board can. If our people will take the
proper amount of interest in an institu
tion of this kind and aid those who are
in charge, there is evtry reason to
peasuade u- that in a very short space
of time this institution could be mad
one of the features of Savannah. It
would develop some of the many unpe -
ceivedopportnnities in the rapid progr ss
of our race. With proper support a
medical college could be opened with all
its superior provisions for the care of
the sick, and thorough and practical ed
ucation in medicine and surgery would
be one of the rare advantages given to
the cslored student in the course of his
professsional studies. Our leading men
-hould not decline the inducement of
fered b« the board of managers. It i
time for us to try to take care of O' r
selves At present, the institution is
well equipped and needs but little mor
t» place it on a level with, others of it
kind. A provision of S6OO monthly i
giv. H for its support, so no one need feel
any alarm that it is the intention of the
present board to saddle its’maintenance
on our people. A colored board can
manage this ju*t as efficiently as th
white board. Churches, schools, col
leges, societies and departments of the
government service a~e managed by col
ored men. Who doubt that they can
manage their own hospital. *
