A Lady Hissed Out of a Thr*\.tkb.
In a notice of the opening of the Strand
Theater, London, the Morning Poet
writes:
In the course of the evening an incident
occurred to which w« have some delicacy
in abuding, but which, as being, so far as
we know, wholly without precedent in an
English ih*»atcr, and also as intimating
censorship of manners in a quarter where,
ording to conventional eslimato, refine
ment is least in bo expected, should not,
perhaps t <* fciitlored to pass without no
tice. In the stalls, which were occupied
for the most port by ladies and gentlemen,
manifestly of go d social position, and all
dressed in evening costume, there was
seated in company with a friend, a tall and
remarkably pretty woman, the extraordi
nary lowness of whoso dress was a genera)
subject of observation, and obviously guvo
great scandal to the audience, among the
female portion of whom a painful sensa
tion was clearly perceptible. At Inst pub
lic indignation found expression in a brief
but emphatic form. No sooner had the
curtain fallen on the tlrst play, than there
was heard from tho gallery a voice utter
ing in slow and well measured accents an
injunction w.iich could be intended but
for ono person in the vaat assembly. Palo
with emotion, yet still retaining her gen
tle, plaojd look—fur there was no taint of
immodesty'her demeanor—she quietly
drew her opera cloak over her shoulders,
ami then tied it tightly round her neck.—
In a few minute* afterward she rose from
hor seal, and leaving behind her her friend
a modestly dressed woman, walked out of
the bouse, amid hisses from tho gallery
aod storn lifeuct, not lost* eloquent, in tho
stalls anti boxr$.
Freak,s of the CuoLRka.—Tho ehol-
ora appear* to bo the most lawless of nil
diseases. No sooner is tho dbcovery of
certain facts supposed to have estabbshed
a principle or precedent, than the wholo
theory is dissipated by fresher develop
ments. Take, for example, tho following
from a Ftorenco letter, of tho loth ult.:
Tho recent progress of tho postilenco
affords a striking refutation of tho opinion
sometimes expressed that the approach of
tho cold season is n guarantee of impunity
against its attacks. After a brief interval
of coinpanuivo repose during tho autum
nal months, the mysterious enemy is once
morn on itrdoadly march, pursuing it*
erratic course, and gathering strength in
tho same gruduat, but inevitable, progres
sion as has been heretofore observed in
othor parts of the country. It is worthy
of note, however, that in no ctiso does the
disorder show any tendency to ro-appear
in spots which it has already visited du
ring tho course of tho year. Tho old
haunts are entirely deserted.”
Wo might reason from this that, tho
harvest of death onco gathered, there
would be no speedy return of the reaper;
but not so. Tho -Levant Herald notices
tho reappearance of cholera at Alexan*
dria and »t Trcbizond.after having totally
ceased. Other places are afHicted in like
manner. There is no such thing as buy
ing exemption from cholera, or warding
off its visitations, except in tho observ
ance of whole«amn sanitary laws.

Support Y«'tm Mechanics.—^Thero is
no truth mere undeniable than that it is
the bounden duty of every community to
support it* mechanics. They area worthy
and indispensable class ot men, and we
find no town or village nourishing with
out their aid. Indiod, their absence is al
ways n true index of the condition of the
; place—whether it is advancing in wealth
and importance or sinking into decay.
Wbonovcr wo pas* through a village, and
hear the freouent sound of the carpenter’s
hamer, the clink of tho blacksmith anvil—
that village, we eny to ourselves, is pros
perous. It cannot bo otherwise; for the
producers are actively omplovod, and
outnumber the consumers. Whenever
this is tho case, tho people pro growing
wealthy, and at the same time training tho
rung generation to habits of industry and
morality. W lien, if a city or village pur
sues the opposite of this courso—neglects
its mechanic*, and supports those of some
othor place, and those who. are loft are
compelled by forco of circumstances tore-
main will become idle and profligate—in a
few years thoy become beggars, and their
children be* oming ignorant and vicious—
they will cease to produce and become
consumers.
A sharp grocer, when a customer who
was buying a gallon of molasses observed
that a good deal remained in tho measure
after it was turned, remarked “There was
