A CONFEDERATE STORY.
Tfil tATTFAl that caused a desertion.
At stscent political gathering in Tub
Gambia, Ala., Gen. Cullen A. Butte rela
ted tbe following touching story in the
course of his speech :
During the winter of 1863-’64 it was
my fortuue to be president of one of the
courts-martial of the Army of Northern
Virginia. One bleak December morning,
while the snow covered the ground aud
the winds howled around onr camp, I left
my bivonao fire to attend the session of
the oovrt. Winding for miles along un
dertake paths, I at length arrived at the
OdvtMround at Bound Oak church. Day
after fay it had boon our duty to try the
w |soldiers of that army charged with
s of military law ; but never had
provions occasion been greeted
anxious spectators as on that
awaited tho opening of the

tglh the case of “The Confeder
ate Stales vs. Edward Cooper” was called;
charge, desertion. A low murmur rose
spontaneously from the battle-scarred
spectators, as a young artilleryman roie
from the prisoners’ bench, and, in re
sponse to the question, “Guilty, or not
guilty?” answered, “Not guilty.”
The Judge Advocate w an proceeding to
open the prosecution, when tho Court, ob
serving the prisoner was unattended by
counsel, interposed and inquired of the
accuse l: “Who is your counsel?” He
yeplied: “I have no counsel." Suppos
ing that ii was bis purpose to represent
himself before tho comt, the Judge Ad
vocate was instructed to proceed. Every
charge and specification aga-nst the pris
oner was sustained, ’i he prisoner was
then told io introduce his witne'ses. He
replied: “I have no witnesses.” Astor-
tonished at the eulmnoss with which lie
seemed to bo submitting to what he re- |
S aided as inevitable fate, I said to him :
Have you no defence ? Is it possible tin t
you abandoned your comrades and de
serted your colors iu tho presence of tho
enemy W.Flout any reason ?” He replied :
“Thera was a reason, but it will not avail
me before a military court.” I said:
“Perhapi you are mistaken; you are
ehaMf with the highest crime known to
minifti law, and it is jour duty to mako
known the causes that influenced your
ftottom.” For the first time his man y
foft* trembled, aud hi» blue eyes swam
la fears. Approaching the president cf

did so: “There General, is what did
