TEACHING PUBLIC SCI
“Forty little urchins
Coming through the door,
Pushing, crowding, making
A tremendous roar.
Why don’t you keep quiet?
Can’t you keep the rule?
Bines me this is pleasant,
Teaching Public St bool.**
Loving little hearts.
Eyes brfmrul or mischief,
Ur skilled in the devil’s arts.
That's a precious darling!
What are you about ?
‘May 1 pass tor water ?’
‘Please may 1 go out?’”
“Boots and shoos are shuffling,
Slates and books aro rattling,
Ami in the corner yondor
Two pugilists are battling.
Others cutting didoes—
What a botheration 1
No wonder wo grow crusty
From such association!”
“Anxious parent drops In,
Merely to inquire
Why hir olive branohes
Do not shoot up higher;
Says ho wants his ohildron
To mind their p’s and q’s,
And hopes their brilliant talonts
Will not bo abused.”
Cultivate tbeir voices 1”
“Institute attondlng,
Making out reports,
Giving object lessons.
Glass drills of all sorts.
Bonding dissertations,
Feeling llio a fool—
Oh, tho untold joy of
Toueblng Public School.”
WIT AND 1IUMOR.
—An old Yorksliiroman usod to say,
“I’m open to conviction, tint I’d liko to
hoc tlio man that can convince mo.”
—“Ilow does that look, oh ? ” said a
big-fisted Wall utreet man to a friend,
holding up one of his brawny hands,
“That,” said his frioud, “looks as though
you’d gone short on soap.”
—A Cincinnati young man sent a note
to his girl asking at what time he should
call, and received in return tho following
brie! billet-doux :
“Deer Jon—Comet afpastate. Mary.”
—An editor says: “We never could
understand why so much shot- should be
wasted in killing birds, while there aro so
many young men who part their hair in
the middle.”
—When a young mule playfully kickH
a darkey on tho levee, tho darkey feels tho
place whero tho mule’s heels lauded, looks
at his bend a minute and exclaims : “You
butter (put. dat dam foolishness; I’ll hurt
you some o’ dose days.”
—An exchange, in speaking of tho
magical strains of a hand organ, says :
“When tho organist played ‘Old Dog
Tray,’ we noliood cloven pups sitting in
front of tho machine on their haunches,
brushing tho tears from their eyes with
their fore paws.”
—A pious old lady who keops boardors
says she always admired St. Paul. lie
preached tho dootriuo of outing what was
set before him, and usking no questions
for conscience sake.
—A West Indian, who had a remark
able red nose, having fallen asleep in his
chair, a uegro boy, who was in waiting,
observed a mosquito hovering around his
faco. Qtushey eyed it very attentively;
at Inst it lit upon his muster’s nose, and
instautly llow off again. “Yah! Yah!”
he exclaimed, with great glee, “me berry
glad to see you burn your fut!”
—In view of the fact that Watt’s hymns
have been translated into tho Choctaw
languago, and bavo become favorites of
tho bravos, an admirer of the noble red
men says it is very ntt’octiug to think of a
noble rod man silting upon a fence and
singing, “How doth tho little busy hoe,”
while he watches his wife carryiug home
a couple of bushels of potatoes upon each
shoulder, and wondering if ho couldn’t
swap that squaw for a jug of robust rum.
—Dr. Johnson said that a man who
wonld make a pun would pick a pocket.
The more practical Dr. Franklin, on the
contrary, said, in a letter written from
London to a Philadelphia friend, July 7,
17<»V>: “I am pleased with your punning,
not merely because I like punning iu
general, but becauso I learn, from your
using it, that you are iu good health and
spirits, in which I pray you may long
continue.”
—A writer in tho St. Puul Frem tells a
new story of lloraco Greeloy. Horace
wrote a uoto to a brothor editor in Now
York whose writing was equally illegible
with his own. Tho recipient of the
note, not being able to read it, sent
it back by tho same messenger to Mr.
Greeley for elucidation. Supposing it
to bo tlio answer to his own note, Mr.
Greeley looked over it, but likewise
was unable to read it, and said to tho
boy: “Go take it back. What does the
damned fool moan ? ” “Yes sir,” said the
boy; “that’s just what he say?.”
