McGintv to build a |2000 Baptist church
at Winterville, and to Mr. Mcltee to erect
a Methodist church at the same place.
Jim Lowe, of Dooly county, up to last
week, was the head of an interesting
family of nine children. Now the number
is twelve, his wife having presented him
with three bouncing boys, all at one time.
Colonel Roan,of Pairburn,took a prisoner
i j to the jury room to consult about the
defense. The prisoner jumped through
the window, and left the lawyer to explain
the case to the court.
Mr. Sam Rhodes, of Wilkes, runs seven
plows and will make an average of sixteen
bales to the plow, 112 in all. Two of his
S lows will make forty-nine bales. In ad
it ion to this he makes 900 bushels of corn.
The seal now in use in the clerk’s office
in Wajfon has been doing service there
sixty-seven years, and yet makes its im
pression as clear-cut as if it were fresh
from the die. The lettering is of au ex
tremely plain style.
Mr. W. N. Mercier and Mr. J. P. Verde-
rey, of Augusta, bought the Magruder
mine and 900 acres of land at Wilkes court
house last spring for $3000. Tuesday last
Mr. Mereier was offered $5000 for his half
interest in the property. The offer was
promptly declined.
Ed. Dyson, colored, of Terrell county,
convicted in 1883 of assault upon a woman,
and sent to the Dade coal mines, has been
pardoned by the governor. The aggrieved
woman, on whose testimony he was con- j
victed, uow confesses that she was not
sure of the identity of the negro, and !
swore ns she did from fear of her husband, j
When Mr. W. P. Doerflinger, of Bruns- !
wick, vas thirteen years old he broke off
the point of a jeweler’s “rat tail” file in :
one of his finger joints. Last Sunday, !
twenty-seven years afterward, it pained j
him for tho first time. So, turning sur- |
geon, he split open his finger, and with j
the aid of Mr. Ed Bingham, took out the
file point.
A bottle of liquor was an important
factor in settling a criminal case at tho last
Walnut Grove court. One man had drawn
a pistol on another in the latter’s house
and a prosecution followed. When the
trial came on the pistol fiend treated the
prosecutor a time or two, they made the
thing up, paid half the costs each and
■topped it. They were really good friends
all the while, and the whisky soothed the
little enmity and made everything serene.

Mr. Roland Jordan, for six years past the

ern railway.
A barn belonging to Koeningsthall Bros.,
of Selma, containing a large lot of hay,
tallow, corn, machinery, etc., was burned can,
to ashes Tuesday night,
no insurance.
‘ Mr. E. M. Barnes, a well known drum
mer, representing H. W. Perry & Co.,
Birmingham, was robbed Tuesday night
while asleep at Cullman of $137. No trace
can be found of the thief.
While unloading some brass shells Wed-
nesdav morning Mr. Sam Cowan, of Union cl0 ,\i' .
Springs, was the victim of a painful acci-
dent. One of tho shells exploded and
badly wounded two of his lingers. It is
thought that the injured fingers can be
saved.
S. A. Logan, alias Carter, a noted confi
dence man and swindler, was arrested at
Birmingham Wednesday. He is wanted
at Chattanooga, where he carried on an
extensive swindling operation for some
time. He was identified by a negro that
he had swindled out of some land.
Wednesday the stockholders of the Shef
field Land, Iron and Coal Company met
and increased its capital stock from $800,-
000 to $1,000,000. The agreement be
tween the Alabama and Tennessee Land
and Iron Company and the Sheffield Laud,
Iron and Coal Company to erect three
large iron blast furnaces at Sheffield, was
unanimously ratified.
Rittenhouse Moore, of Mobile, has been
awarded the contract for dredging about
400 000 yards of material from the Wash
ington canal at thirteen cents per cubic
yard. His bid3 were the lowest at the sec
ond reopening of proposals At the first
opening of bi3s Benson & McKee were the
lowest bidders, but all the bids were 1 r “"
jected as being too high. The bid of Rit
tenhouse Moore is regarded as very low.
Similar work was done last year by Ben
son & McKee for fifteen cents, but they
would not guarantee the work this year at
the same price.
