Annual Council ot the Protestant Epis
copal Church In the Diocese of Georgia.
[Reported for the News and Hebald.]
THIRD DAY.
Saturday, May 12, 18fle.
The minutes of yesterday were read and confirmed.
The Committee to revise assessments to support tha
Bishop made a report sljghtly changing the present
UBrssmonts. Adopted.
The Committee on Widows and Orphans made their
report, which was adopted, and is as follows :
The t'ommittee to whom was referred the report of
Cia Wardens of Christ Church, Savannah, in regard
u the fund for the relief of widows and orphans of
deceased clergymen, respectfully report :
Ihcy learn that, since the report of the Wardens of
Christ Church was made, they have reoeived a bond
■ iiw city ol Savannah for five hundred dollars in
; ,yuiriit of coupons past due, and that hereafter the
.garret on the three thousand five hundred dollars
mil be punctually paid. They are led to believe that
there are now one or more widows of deceased clergy
man to Whom even a small amount might be of great
Ralstonce in the present condition of affairs. The in
terest oil die fund is uow at the disposal of the
■ lined, as tlio ten years during which we were re
tired to allow it to accumulate has elapsed. But it
ati-t large enough to meet present demands, much
as the future wants of the Diocese. It therefore
Kerned to your Committee that the object of the
■ Lin'd should be to devise some means by which
immediate aid might be given to thoae who need the
ifdieflt which this fund was intended to afford, and at
ike same time have it still to continue to accumulate.
In, the impression of tho Committee that if a por-
in of the collections could be made available for tho
uae! of widows and orphans of deceased clergymen
hi- •n'.ributlous would be very largely increased;
i.'.at the moment our peoplo learned that the loved
- I these taithlul clergymen who had worn out
dor lives iu the service of the Church in this Dio-
- needed and would be benefited by their contri*
iiti'.iis, it would touch a chord iu their hearts whieh
S aid lead lo large contributions, given not grudg-
- ol necessity, but with glad minds and hearts.
.1 nils he so, the Committee believe that both objects
lit r.e accomplished by the adoption ol the following
rr.'iul lOUd .
i.V'ditt-d, That the thanks of the Council are due to
Wardens and Vestry for the manner in which they
>'*- matt aged the fund entrusted to their care, and
they are earnestly requested to continue to act as
rirtees.
.^solved, That the clergy'be requested to call the
so jl attention of their congregations to tho impor-
at-u of liberal contributions to this fund, and to take
.; the annual collections on Christmas Dsy.
Besotted, That the Wardens and Vestry of Christ
.birth, Savannah, ho requested to hold one-half of
•.j mutual interest and collections, subject to the cr-
of the Bishop, and to Invest the balance.
oicid, That the Bishop be requested to disburse
ft amount subject to his order, according to hia dis-
uttlOll.
The committee to revise
dnoBi submitted their report. It was adopted.
Most of the changes recommended were such as
,:f*out of the resumption of legislative relations
v.ttitbe Church North.
Toe pioseut Treasurers oi the Diocese and standing
.mmitteos were re-elected.
Htv Mi Williams was elected a Trustee of the
iavtrsity Stuth, vice Rev. Mr* Hawkes, deceased.
The Committee on the state of the Church made
&■:toport which was adopted,
ili Hunt offered an amendment to the 4th Article
-'the Constitution giving clergyman engaged in li.*
• »... .Lstruction and disabled clergymen the right to
’-t« The amendment was adopted and laid over to tha
tut Convention.
tSsCommitte on Finance submitted their report,
'ich was adopted.
iCommlttee to whom was referred to quicken and
nxM Missionary operations recommended four
•usrly collections and that the parishes be requested
taiso an amount at least equal to the assessment for
u "aprort of the Episcopate. The Rectors are re-

Mrs. Loretta j. DeCaulp, well-known as
Lieutenant T. Buford, of the Confederate
States Army, is now temporarily in this city,
and residing at the Pulaski House, but will
soon leave for Charleston. Her object here
is to collect subscriptions for three fourth-
coming works which she is preparing, enti
tled “ The Cruise of the Shenandoah, or the
last of the Confederacy“ The History of
the Southern Confederacy, including Person
al Adventures of the Authoressand “Bu
ford’s Poems.”
At the commencement of the War she de
voted her property and her personal exer
tions to the Confederate cause, and in male
disguise raised a company in Texas, which
she commanded at Manassas. Shp was af
terwards connected with a cavalry company
at the West. She was three years in active
service, and was three times wounded and
once taken prisoner. She was also for about
a year in the C. S. Government service North
and in Europe. Her adventures were of a
remarkable character, and her material for
interesting works relating to the war, histori
cal, reminiscental and documentary are un
rivalled.
She desires to publish the works as soon as
she can obtain the requisite means, and that
those triendly to the object will send contri
butions or subscriptions to herin the care of
this office, the Pulaski House, or her agent,
Mr. A. B. Watt, Exchange Hotel, Mont
gomery, Ala. The following is from the At
lanta Intelligencer:
Mrs. DeCaulp.—It was in 1863 we first met
in this city, this second “Joan of Are." She
was tben attired in the garb of an officer, and
was introduced to us as Lieutenant Buford,
in the Confederate service. There are many
now in this cily who will remember this he
roine, and her marriage with her late hus
band, Mr. DeCaulp, a soldier in tbfe same
service, since deceased. We had lost sight
of, and knowledge of the whereabouts of this
daring and romantic girl, until a few days ago,
when we saw in one of dur Southern ex
changes a complimentary notice of her, and
of her return to the South. Of this fact we
had occular demonstration on yesterday, lor
while we were engaged, scissors in hand,
clipping from onr exchanges, there entered
into onr sanctum, an elegantly dressed lady,
still in the bloom of youth, and beautiful to
behold, whom we soon recognized as the
veritable Lieutenant Buford, now a widow,
her husband having died shortly after her al
liance with him. Mrs. Loretta J. DeCaulp—
for that is the lady’s name in full—informs us
that she surrendered herself a prisoner in
Washington City, to the authorities there,
and was treated with great kindness. She
has been a great traveller—having visited
Europe twice, Canada also, and on each oc
casion in confederate service. She is now
engaged in writiog her history, in which will
be embraced, of course, the dangers through
which she has passed in the tented, and 'bn
the battle field; on the high seas and
amid the crowded cities of Europe; at Nassau,
and iu runniDg the blockade, uud for the
publication of which she solicits subscribers
and contributions.

MICA CANVAS ROOFING.
T HE CANVAS ROOFING is adapted to building.
of every description, in all climates, and can tie
applied to steep or flat roofs. We recommend its nse
on Factories, Foundries, Store-houses, Cotton Sheds
Railroad Depots, and upon all buildings where steam
is used and a Fire-proof Roof required.
The foundation of the Canvas Rooting is a heavy
hemp canvas, which is completely saturated and coat
ed on both sides with our improved Water-proof
Composition, which excludes moisture and prevents
rot.
The upper surface of the Roofing is protected from
the action of the weather by covering it with the
ground mineral Isinglass or Mica, which is pressed
into tho Water-pro ;f Compoait on, making a hard
surtace, beautiful in appearapee and a sore protection
against fire.. The Mica being a reflector and non-con
ductor of heat, no Roof is so cool in summer.
The Canvas Roofing is made into sheets seventy-five
feet long by forty inches wide, making a surface of
250 square feet in each sheet. This Roofing ha. only
to be nailed to the roof to make a Durable Fire and
Water-proof Roof.
