SAVANNAH, MONDAY, MAY 14. 1866.
[Correspondence of the Commercial.]
Den Klee before . tbe Reconstruction
Committee. " .
The Committee on Reconstruction still persists in
suppressing the most important testimony elicited
| before it. Dan Rice has recently been on a circus tonr
through the lately rebellions States, and has had op
portunities such as are afforded to few for observing
i the condition of the Southern people as to loyalty.
His testimony will be found to show the true feeling
that exists in the South when the thin crust of pre
tended loyalty is melted away and true character is
revealed under the exhilarating influence of a mena
gerie, when man stands in the presence of the untamed
forces of nature, separated therefrom only by-the thin
partition of an iron cage. Mr. Rice being duly sworn,
testified thus:
Q. You have an unruly animal, kuown as a pet
mule, with your circus, have you not?
A. i have.
Q. What are the idiosyncracies of that beast?
A. He is much given te kicking.
Q. It is almost impossible to ride him, is it not?
A. It is. I generally offer $23 to any man who will
ride him round the ring.
Q. 4 On your late visit to the South, did you receive
any offers to ride that mule ?
A. I aid.
* Q. State what occurred on these occasions ?
A. In Richmond, a discharged Confederate soldier
attempted to ride him, but was immediately thrown
flat on his back.
Q. What did the Confederate soldier say to this?
A. He said the mule was a d—d Yankee cuss.
Q. Did an}* others make the attempt ?
A. Another of Lee’s veterans tried to ride him, and
succeeded.
Q. What did he say ? ^ .
A. He said, after he had dismounted, that ir he d
had a regiment o' them ’ere cavalry he'd have whip
ped Kilpatrick all to smash; and that in the next war
against the Yankees li? intended to raise a brigade of
’em.
Cross-examined by Mr. Stevens:
Q. Is that a.he mule or a she mule ?
A. it’s a he mute.
q. You have monkeys in your show, have you not ?
A. I have. *
g. Have you ever heard any disloyal remarks in re
lation to those monkeys?
A. I can’t say that I have.
y. Have you ever heard anything said in their pres
ence ?
A. A couple of young ladies were one day standing
in front of the cage, and I heard one of them say it
looked like a Freedman’s Bureau. - «
Q. How was this romark received ?
A. It created much laughter.
Q. Were there any jicrsoual allusions made on that
occasion ?
A. Some one in the crowd said, pointing to tho ou
rang-outang, “That’s Sumner.”
Q. Did that please the bystanders ?
A. Very much.
Q. Did you ever hear any observations about the
bears ?
A. I heard it said once about a one-eyed bear that he
looked like Ben. Butler, and about a grizzly that it
ought to be called Ben. Wade.
• Q. Were the points of resemblance stated ?
A. They were not. The observation was made on
Die tout ensemble, with special reference, perhaps, to
the occular deformity in the case of the one-eyed ani
mal.
Q. Have you side shows with your circus ?
A. I have.
Q. State if you have ever heard disloyal remarks in
relation to them ?
A. I believe I heard something of the kind once
about Daniel in the lion’s den.
Q. State what it was.
A. A young lady asked me which was Daniel and
which was the lion.
y. What was your reply V
A. I told her it was easy to distinguish Daniel from
the lion, as the former wore a swallow-tail, coat, and
lmd a cotton umbrella under his arm.
Q What did she say V
A. Alter looking into the cage she said, very spite
fully. that Daniel looked like a mean Yankee, and she
wished the lion would chaw him up.
STATE ITEMS.
The physicians of Macon have passed a series oi
resolutions on the death of Dr. White, of Milledge-
vilie. They are complimentary to his past life, as a
physician, scholar and gentleman.
The city physicians of columbus reports that on the
4th of April, there were 57 small pox cases in the hos
pital ; roceived service up to May 7th, 31 ; between
those dates discharged, 57, and six died ; on hand
May 7th, 25—total number of cases, 88.
The stockholders of the Montgomery and Eufaula
Railroad will assemble in convention on the oth of
June, for the purpose ot devising the most speedy
means of completing and equipping said road from
Montgomery to Union Springs, which, when dooe,
will give an additional rail connection between the
former city and Columbus.
Interesting Tbial at Waynesboro.—A letter to
the Augusta Chronicle anil Sentinel says :
This community has been very deeply interested in
the progress of a trial for the last two days on the
criminal side of the Court against one of the leading
citizens of the country and a prominent minister of
the Gospel, on a charge of felony, involving great moral
turpitude, and a verdict of guilty has just been ren
dered. The defence was very ably conducted by Hon.
J. J. Jones and Col. J. L Singleton. A motion has
been made for a new trial, which is to be argued at
next Burke Court.

Gen. E. D. Tracy —The funeral of the late Gen.
E. D. Tracy, on the 10th, at Macon, was very impos
ing. About II o'clock, *he funeral car, (one of the
National Expresss Co’s wagons, splendidly decorated),
moved off from the depot, with the remains, and were
followed by the old members of Macon Volunteers,
Macon Fire Department, members of the Bar, and
4 u 1 >ng string of carriages, besides quite a number ou
foot.
Smuggling Darkies.—W r # understand lhat more
than one negro woman has been sent to jail in Colum
bus for the crime of smuggling away children of
freedinen. Tho object appears to be to carry the
little darkies of “workable” ago to the country and
dispose of them for a term of years for a considera
tion. They pretend to the planter that the children
are theirs. One little darkey who was missing at hie
home, we are told, was found concealed in the bed of
a negro woman. If the Bureau is of any account,
ami what we hear is true, the practice can be easily
stopped.—Columbus Sun, llth.
Tbe Columbus Sun s*ys that the lightning rod on
the Episcopal Church m that city was struck by light-
mug on Thursday \ast. The flash and report were
almost simultaneous. For a few seconds immediately
after tbe report the weather vane was seen to rapidly
revolve, and then to suddenly stop. No damage done,
except tb'j breaking ou Broad*street of a buggy shaft
by a fool horse, who was scared by the fuss.
A little girl entered a bar-room, and in pitful
tom s told the keeper that her mother had sent her to
get eight cents.
Eight cents?” said the bar-keepsr.
“Yes, sir.’’
“What does your mother want with eight cents ? I
don’t owe her anything.”
“Well,” said the child, “father spends all his money
here for ruin, and we have had nothing to eat to-day.
Mother wants to buy a loaf of bread.”
“Kick her out,” said a loafer to the bar-keeper.
“No,” was the reply, “I’ll give her the money, and
if her lather comes back I’ll kick him out.”
