—In response to a request to furnish a sketch of his
life for the Phrenological Journal, Theodore Tilton, of
the New York Independent, simply wrote : • ‘I was
born in New York city, October 2,1835, have, as yet,
done nolhing worth mentioning, and cannot tell when
I shall die. This is the whole story.".- The modesty

—A curious apparatus for propelling balloons
through tho air has been devised by Mr. Butler, one
of the members at the now Aeronautical Society in
London. It consists of a pair of wings, operated from
the car of the balloon, whose downward blow is cal
culated to strike with a force exceeding forty pounds,
a power equivalent to an ascensive force of one thou
sand cubic feet of csrbnretted hydrogen. The action
required is somewhat similar to that of rowing,
—The Columbia South Carolinian says the amount
of money being laid out in that city in buildings now
in course of erection is $116,009, and that tho total
amount estimated to have been invested in new build
ings since the war is $500,000.

—The Rev. E. E. Fairchild says that while in Pales-
iiue, he luet, on the banks of the Jordan, two Engliah
liiiyjiuen filling an - assortment of cans and bottles
with water from the river. The water was intended
lur t ho baptism of children on their return home, and
one remarked that it would pay the expenses of his
tour to the Boly Land -as he would not baptise a child
w ith it tor less than a £4 note.
—A correspondent states that there are in London
36 King streets, 34 Charles streets, 32 John streets, 26
High streets, 25 Church streets, 20 George streets, 18.
Duke streets, and 21 New streets. One would suppose
that certain names had been the fashion, and were
given to'every street made until another favorite arose.
Of lute years Victoria and Albert streets hsva been the
popular names, and there must be A dozon of each,
besides places, courts and squares.
—A man named Houseman waa recently murdered
at Bellvernon, Pa., by his wife’s paramour. Tha wife
tried to poison him several times but failed. One
night when Houseman was asleep, however, Thairwsll
put the muzzle of s gun to his head, fired and killed
1 him instantly ; and hie wife then put a rope around
his neck, attached an anchor to it and assisted to drag
the body to the river.
—A wretch named Mayhew was bung in Batavia, N.
Y., last week. Ho murdered the husband of a woman
with whom he held 'improper relations, and on the
gtfiowa declared that she urged him to commit the
crime, and rejoiced at lt when done.
—A babe which jumped from the arms of its nurse
into the Ohio rivor at Louisville s few days since, and
was in danger of being swept over the falls, was res
cued by a Newfoundland dog on board the steamer in
which the child's mother was traveling.
—A French professor haa'diicovered that the earth
does not move so fretaa it did 2,000years ago. Tha
learned man computes that in one thousand six hun
dred millions of years hence it will come to a stand
stilt.
—The London Fun publishes a cartoon represent
ing President Johnson and Justice. “Stand firm,”
says Justice, “ I am with you.” The President holds
in his hand a sword, npon which is inscribed the word
“Veto.”
—It is somewhat singular that the body of the late
Cclleetor Preston King, of New York, should have
been found on the day his successor entered upon the
duties of his office, alter the situation had been vacant
just six months.
—A “ lady” occupant of a house i^Hrooklyn being
about to evacuate the premises, placed a notice in the
window: “This house to let; inquire within.” She
leased Lbs building to no lees than six different per
sons, receiving a month's rent in advance, and then
suddenly disappeared.

for half a century. The river is a good rafting stream
for miles above my lands, from which place parties
are rafting great quantities to Burnt Fort. There
are improvements at different points on the river,
some of which have good peach orchards, and pro
duce corn, sea Island and upland cotton, sugar cane,
and all other southern products, as well as any lands
In Southern Georgia.

House. It is claimed that the evidence is sufficient to
convict him.
—The Agriciiltnral Bureau is in receipt of a swarm

—A bomb-shell on the battle-field of Chicamauga

Whereas, the Harbor -MWter, in eofisequcncc ol
the increase of his duties, was compelled, on the sth
day of January last, to. employ the services of an
assistant, and from that time has found it necessary
to retain such assistant's services at Ibp rate of six
hundred'dollars per annum ; aud whereas) It is im-
poi tant to tho Interests of commerce that a Deputy
Harbor Master, boappointard at a proper compensa

that “Tlie Merchants’National Bank of Savannah,”
in the city of Savannah, in the. county of Chatham,
aud State ol Georgia, has been duly organized under
anil according to the requirements nf the net of
Congress entitled “An Act to provide a National
Currency, secured by a pledge of United Statqji
bonds', aud to provide for the circulation and re
demption thereof,” approved June 3, 1661, and has
complied with all tlie provisions of said act required
to he. complied with before commencing the business
of banking under said act. : J;
Now, therefore, I, Freeman Clarke, Comptroller ot
tlie Currency, do hereby certily that “The Merchants
National Bank of savannah,” in the city of Savsu-
naii, in the county of Chatham and State of Georgia,
is authorized to commence the business of banking
under the act aforesaid; >
