SAVANNAH MARKET.
Remarks.
' . Fbiday, May 25,1696.
All purchases of produce having been suspended
under adverse intelligence from Europe, there hu
been nothing to found Exchange upon, and bills have
disappeared from the market. Sight checks on New
York con readily be had at the Banks at |) cent
premium; aud sterling has sold aa high as 42 ¥ cent
premium; an advance of 10 $) cent since the early
part of the month.
There is general confidence that the worst new*
from abroad has reached us, and that a change for the
better in business here will soon be apparent.
Coxtos—Since our last review this market has
shown a great reaction from tho extreme depression
of lait week, and notwithstanding the crisis in Liver
pool and the anticipated effect of lt in New York, prices
have advanced in all the markets of the South about
six cents a pound, carried along by a similar feeling In
N. Y. The only apparent esusee for euch an advance
are the accounts of the next crop being so bad, and
the now more general demand from Northern spinners,
also tha advance in gold, consequent on the drain from
this country to Europe, and while we mention the
firet cause, we would remark that ae far aa our direct
Intelligence reaches, aud from what we con cull from
our Western exchanges, we consider the next crop
prospects as nearlv desperate, and the lesser estimates
are becoming doily more In favor. Extraordinarily
high rivera, very wet weather, with cold, chilly nights,
bad seed and inefficiency of labor an positive facts,
and their affect can be ae wall as Limited by our read-
an aa by us.
We would cn present advance quote our market
squally Irregular, as under the depression, while we
would give prices as follows:
Good Middling : •»
