SAVANNAH, TUESDAY, JULY 3, 1866.
The Ho* Se«»o»
»Y OLIVES WESLBLL HOLXEa.
The folks (hat on the firet of May
Wore winter coats ana hose,
Bcuan to say, the first of June,
••Good Lord! how hot It grows.
At last two Fahreuheits blew up.
And killed two children small.
And one barometer shot dead
A tutor, with its ball.
Sow all day long the locusts sang
Among the leafless trees;
Three ufw hotels warped inside out.
The pumps could only wheeze;
Aniripe old wine, that twenty years
Had col>-webbed o’er in vain.
Came sprouting through the rotten corks
Like July's best champagne.
Plump men of mornings ordered tights.
But, e’er the scorching noons,
Their caudle-moulds had grown as loose
As Cossack pantaloons;
The ti gs ran mad—men could not try
If water they would choose;
A horse fell dead—he only left
Four red-hot, rusty shoes.
But soon the people could not bear
Tho slightest hint of fire—
Allusions to calurio drew
A Hood of savage ire;
The leaves on heat were all torn out
From every book at school.
And many blackguards kicked and caned,
Because they said, “Keep cool
The g s-llght companies wore mobbed,
T e bakers all were shot,
rile penny press began to talk

IN GENERAL.
—A civil lights case has occurred in Som
erset county, in this State. A negro woman,
charged with assault and battery of a youth,
the son of a citizen of that county, has been
arrested and bound over to appear before the
next Grand Jury. Some persons, who are
said to have threatened violence against the
woman, have been arrested and bound over
to keep the peace, the negro woman claiming
a warrant under the Civil Bights bill.
— A literary gentleman whose courtesy iu
a certain matter a pretty woman had reward
ed with a kiss, was so well pleased with the
mode of payment, and so little satisfied with
the amount that, judging by the following
epigramic reply, he is likely to prove a uitlier
inexorable creditor. We don’t blame him.

Mokk of tHb Professional Gentry.—1
Yesterday we cbrouioled the boldest attempt j
at larceny that haa ever transpired in Atlanta, j
This morning we furnish an account of an- j
other robbery which, though perhaps not 1
quite so bold, proved more successful. I
A burglar entered the office of Mr. R. R.
Clarke, on Whitehall street, and abstracted I
flow bis safe the sum of f650. The entrance j
was made so stealthily through a back win- j
dow as not to arouse the bookkeeper—who |
occupied the office as a sleeping room—took j
the sale key from hia (the bookkeeper’s);
pocket, opened the safe, lifted the money i
drawer and made his way into the back yard

where he left it with all of Mr. C.’s papers, )
draft iu the cities of Mexico, Puebla and I and about two. dollars and a half in specie.,
The bookkeeper’s watch and pocket book ,
Queretaro.
Santa Anna—Bombast and Quixotism.—
According to the Tribune, General Santa
Anna has $10,000,000 on deposit in the Bank
of England. Hu proposes to establish a
new and stable government in Mexico, with
a constitution aud taws, republican iu form,
with the Church Tor ils head. One of the
essential conditions is, however, a complete
assertion of principles and interests between
tho Unitch States and Mexico, upon the fol
lowing basis ; The United States to advance
to him (Santa Anna) one million of dollars
and three thousand men, in return for which
he will swear eternal gratitude to the Amer
ican nation, and give it i n security certain
Mexican provinces and territories. The con
tract once sealed, General Santa Anna will
immediately start ior Maximilian, where his
preseuce, his men and his millions will create
quite an enthusiasm. According to his own
statement, the church will take him by the
band, the army will prostrate itself at his
feet, aud the best part of the Liberal party,
renouncing its present leaders, will form an
intimate allianee. As the Imperialists who
stick to Maximilian, not through love, .but
through fear and compulsion, they will be
too happy to place the Government under
the protection of the General and to abandon
a cause without dignity and strength iu the
present or prospective future.
was aiso stolen. Some thirty or forty dollars
of his money waa in State bank bills, princi
pally of i he Bank of Middle Georgia.
Mr. C. had between twelve and fifteen
thousand dollars iu bank bijla enveloped iu
an old newspaper in the. safe, which the fel
low happened not to discover. Also a couple
of packages of bills issued by the Western &
Atlantic Railroad during the war, which he
examined, disapproved, and left after search
iug the cook room attached to the store
, The thief left no traces of how he entered
or departed from the back yard, hence it is
reasonable to suppose that he had familiar
ized himself with the premises by frequent
tours of observation;
Up to the present writing no arrest has
been made. Our authorities are, however,
on the yui vice, and determined to ferret out
and thoroughly purge the community of this
fresh swarm of professional rascals.—Atlanta
