B *VATOIAH, 'jftJESDAY, JULY 24, *SS6.
TM( King Oak.
Tha foreat sward was bis palace floor, ..
The sky v,lth its vaulted roof:
And .tronnd Uis-throne his giant cour-
Stood solemnly aloof.
Young iu the past and lawless days
When force was right divine,
An.l steel-clad Augers griped the blades
Tuat made a monarch sigh.
He had known all the still long summer he«<*.
The wood-dove sweet to hear.
The insect hum, the iern that reaches'
The antlers of the deer.
He had known grim wi-" 1 '’ 8 frozen blasts,
The rattling brar-^ 6 * “oupd.
The cold bea£~oJ»*>•/"
The fetters bound.
p. uad loved the soft-returning spring,
Under whose gentle spell
The grass sprung up, the leaf came forth,
White blossom and the blue bell.
With a kingly Joy in the winter drear.
Withfthe storm he wTeatled high;
But he ever welcomed the ber*lu ray
That shone when spring drew nigh.
It touched the gl js* of velvet moss
Upon the old oak's breast ;
It peeped into the squirrel's haunt.
And found the thrushes' nest
It woke the spirits of fern and flower,
Whose eleep had lasted long;
Dispersed the cloud, let loose the brook.
And filled the woods with song.
Old oak! long centuries of time
Bast thou beheld depart ;
Be tWy repeated, ere decay.
Shall reach thy mighty heart.

We were drubbed by the Confederates on
several occasions as badly as the Austrians
were at Isudowa, and we drubbed the Con-

fighting was kept up tour years. Whatever
may be said about the conduct of the war in
America, we are sure that American pluck
does not suffer by comparison with that of
