SAVANNAH, FQIDAY, SEPTEMBER 14,1866. .
In General.
— A man hanging is better than a vaga
bond—he has a visible'cleans of support.
—The population of Rome is said to have
increased thirty thousand within the last-five
years. It is now put down tp 210,701.
—General Fullerton has swapped off his
sword for a copy of ;Calpe vpon Littleton,
and has gone to practicing tfiW in St. Louis.
—“All flesh is grass,*’ sighed Spriggles,
after dinner the other dhy; and the wretch
immediately added, “of all grasses give we a
plump glass widow.”
—Major Pollard B. Lee, formerly on
Generals Bragg and Johnston's staff, is lyiDg
at the point of death* at; Memphis, trom dis
ease contracted while in the army.
—The colored pappialjq*i>f Boston, Mass.,
is increasing at the'rats Of-' twenty-five per’
dav, but the Traveler says that the experi
ment of introducing colored domestics from
the South has not been successful.
—Gen. Hood, when in Austin, the other
day, was waited on by a committee of the
Legislature, and escorted to a seat of honor
in that body. All the members rose as the
crippled hero entered.
—The Harrisburg, Pa., papers tell of a
man aud woman discovered on Monday,
who live in a hut in the woods not far from
that city, and wear no clothing except a
girdle round theif'loins. -
—Mrs. Jenkins’compl&ined in the evening
that the turkey she had eaten at Thanksgiv
ing did not set well. “Probably,” said
Jenkins, “it was not a hen-turkey.” He got
a gkiss of water in his face.
—Exactly seventeen years elapsed from
the appearance of the first Asiatic cholera in
the year 1832 until its re-appearance in 1849,
and the same number of years have passed
since 1849 until the visitaiion in the present
year, giving an interval of seventeen years
between each occasion.
—So common has become the shooting of
ministers in Missouri, it is now' regarded as
a branch of sporting. In Cooper county the
other day a stranger, in search of game, was
answered, “Not much, sir, but there’s the
preacher coming over the hill.”
—The Richmond correspondent of the
New York Herald proposes that Gen. Grant
and GenAec attend the Cleveland Conven
tion, and enter arm-in-arm. Not a bad sug
gestion, hut a little too dramatic, we opine,
to suit the taste of those old war horses.
—Nearly every German Prince has at least
a hundred thousand dollars invested
American securities, and the' King of Han
over, who has been notified that he can
not return to his throne, has half a million in
our loans.
—The Mississippi Cotton Growers’ As
sociation, from correct deductions made
from their report, say they expect that not
over 200,000 bales will be grown in . Missis
sippi, and not over 1,200,000 throughout the
country.
—A Virginia paper states that of five hun
dred cadets who graduated at the Virginia
Military Institute, before its destruction by
Hunter's forces, four hundred and seventy-
five of them were killed and wonuded in the
army under Gen. Lee.
—Four soldiers belonging to the United
States Filth artillery, now stationed at the
Dry Tortuga?, Florida, deserted on the 30th
of August, but while attempting to pass
through the harbor of Key West, ^n a boat
which they had stolen, they were arrested
ana secured.
—The Methodist Protestant Church in
West Virginia Jus divided its (if iUU> two
parts—political and religious, wccali them—
one having united with a Northern church,
and the other retained the old discipline
and form of government. It is not neces
sary to say which section is the political
one.-

Meeting of the Gdvernort-Is there Not
Revolution Ahead?
[From the New York Herald, of Saturday.]
The secret conc lave of Hie Radical Governors of the
Northern States in Philadelphia, after the adjourn
ment of the Convention on Tuesday last, is one of the
most significant and alarming signs or the times. A
portion of the proceedings leaked out, and the cor
respondent of the Hriald gave the public the benefit
of that on Wednesday last.. Bujfwe have! Ufa strong
est reasons for sayfng that the question .'then venti
lated about dodging negro suffrage was not the only
or most important one discussed by this conclave. It
is underst, >od that a revolutionary programme was en
tertained looking to future political contingencies—
that is, to prepare arms’ Slid efficient armed State
organizations for a conflict with the * Conserva
tives and possibly with tlio President in the
event of the Radicals being in danger of .losing
their power through the result of the faU elec
tion. It is evident that these really dangerous lead
ers of a dangerous party are determined to hold on to
their power at all hazards ; for, as Governor Cony, ot
Maine, said, if they lose it now “then all is lost.”
They are doubtless prepared to impeach and remove
the President and to place Ben. Wade or some other
violent Jacobin in bis place, and would resist the le
gitimate power of the Executive to the extent of cast
ing out the militia of the States.
Eleven Govern’ rs of State, besides ex-Governors and
Lieutenant-Governors, composed this new secret Jaco
bin cblb. ’* he vipleeit declamatioiis of the miserable
firebrands, male aid female, blackjapd white, in the
Convention and A public mcebqgt in Philadelphia,,
might not be regarded as very serious ; but it is l'ar
different with the secret meeting of a body of men
who have the executive power of eleveh Northern
States in their hands.
There is danger ahead, and it behooves the Conser
vative masses of the North to look to it. As to the
South, there is no danger there. The people of that
section have experienced the horrors of civil war to
such a degre and are su thoroughly subdued that they
will uot try rebellion again. The danger is at home.
We may have, before we are aware of it, a bloody civil
war in every State, conuty and city of the North.

Messrs. Barrett A Co:
I was induced to give your H:firp epaiationa trial,
and can heartily recommend it as unequalled as a
Dressing. Purifier and Restorer,—giving to the Hair
a luxuriant richness, and to the head a cool and
most agreeable sensatiaq, while it is thorough In re

Messts. J. R BxRRETT A Co:
I was induced by a friend to make a trial of Bar
retl’s Vegetable Hair Restorative, and I am very
mnch pleased with the ‘ ffect it has had on my hair.
1 was nearly half gray, and now, liefore using one
bottle, my head is freed from dandruff, and my hair
has all the appearance of youth. I fully believe Bar
rett’s to be the best hair preparation in the world.
