TO OtJiL COUNl'KY FRIENDS.
As much interest lefelt throughout the country ia
regard to 'the prospects of tbe cotton and^tfcer crops
we will be grateful to our planting friends and others
in the interior for information on that subject. Those
who have opportunities for obtaining valuable infor
mation in regard to the growing crops, the working
of the l'ree-Ubor system, and kindred matters, of gen
eral interest, will confer- a favor by communicating
the same to us.
THE CONSPIRACY" AGAINST JEFFER.
SOI DAVIS.
In our issue of yesterday we published,
from the New York Herald, a correspond
ence between Judge Advocate General Holt,
and Conover, one of his testimony hunters,
in the case of Mr. Davis, which, no doubt
attracted the attention of our readers, as af
fording evidence of the alleged conspiracy to
implicate Mr. Davis and ethers in the plot
to assassinate President Lincoln. In the
Herald of the 26th ihst., Mr. Holt publishes
a communication, in vfhich he denies the
authenticity of these letters. In reply, the
Herald says: ,
We have no desire to impugh the motives
or to assail the standing of Judge Holt, bat
upou comparing the original;letters with the
manuscript of his denial we are forced, in
the absence of a microscopic test, to pro
nounce them written by the same hand. The
letters may be seen at this office, either by
the Judge Advocato General or any other
perspu who may feel curious in regard to the
matter.
The Herald certainly proposes a very fail-
test of the authenticity of Mr. Holt’s letter
at least. ,
When it was first mooted that evidence
existed to show that a conspiracy had been
entered Into to subborn testimony for the
purpose of implicating Mr. Davis in the as
sassination of the late President, the public
sense was shocked-at the suggestion. It
was difficult to believe that men existed in
this enlightened age and country capable of
purposes so fiendish and diabolical, but
recent developments have forced the painful
conviction that tbe charge is not without
foundation. "
THE FORUUAM RACES.
The presence of trans-Atlantic theatrical
stars, and the excitements of the tnrf, are
just now constituting a new era in the fash
ionable circles of New York city. Thef faces
at Jerome Park, which commenced outlies-'
day last, of which the telegraph has fur
nished a “brief mention,” seems to have
been a grand affair. The opening of the first
day is represented by the press of that city
as the greatest event that has ever transpired
in the fashionable world on this continent.
The Metropolis was out in full feather; bril
liant equipages, without number, were on
the ground ; fashionable society tiuueil out
en masse, while the attendance, which amount^
■ ed to tens of thousands, also included-Repre
sentatives from all ranks in the community.
General Grant and Madame Ristori were on
the ground, and were the observed- of all ob
servers. Out of the twenty-nihe entries,
only four came to the stand at the sound of
the bugle—Kentucky, Onward, Fleetwing
and Idlewild. Kentucky was the favorite, at

For ten days past much uneasiness has
beeu expressed throughout the country
in regard to - the growing crops of corn in
the Western States, which, it was reported,
had been damaged by unseasonable weather.
The following from the Chicago Tribone
ot the 20th inst., correcting the erroneous
impression on this subject will be read with
satisfaction by all. It says :
“A private telegram received on Saturday
morning from Peru, Illinois, staled that the
frost had exercised a very beneficial effect on
the crop on the Illinois Kiver ‘bottom,’ as it
checked the growth of foliaee aud stalk, and!
hastened the ripening of the ear. In our’
opinion the crop has not received any ma
terial damage. The ear was welt protected
by a luxurious growth of leaves, which the
frost has not yet been severe enough to
penetrate. We still believe, and the feeling
generally pervading the minds of corn
operators gives additional force, that tbe
crop will be one of the largest and best that
tbe West has ever produced, provided it
shall be favored with dry, clear Weather for
about two weeks.’’ .- ■ 7 / - -
