Hoses Baird was charged with being drunk and
found lying in some rice chaff near the upper rice

Stbauho- Cotton.—In the Mayor’s Court, yester
day morning, Joe Burns, a small negro boy about
eight or ten years of age, was charged with stealing
cotton from Hunter A Gammell’s wharf. A private
watchman said that be found the defendant and an-
comtng from, behind some cotton bales,
each wltkra lxag of cotton, arid that when he pursued
them they ran and dropped the bags, and one oi the
boys escaped. Upon examination, he fdbnd one of
the bales hsd been cut open with a knife, and the boy
arrested admitted that his companion had done it.
The mother & the boy was brought into court, and
aaid ehn didnjt know the age of her boy; that she
tried to keep an eye on him, and for the future would
keep a closer one. In answer to a question of the
Mayor, she said she would punish the boy, and he
was then ordered to be sent to the Barracks, and she
was ordered to go there and thrash him.
Old Whbat Whiskey.—Wo acknowledge the re
ceipt, tram Mums Scranton k Smith, of a sample of
B. P. Middleton's old Wheat whiskey. The age of this
whiskey dates back to the period "whereof the

pure and good when manufactured, and, like all good
