SATURDAY MORNING. DECEMBER 15. 1866.
M< Two Annie*.
BY O. W. HOUfEfl.
As Life’s unending column pour*. .
Two marshalled hosts are Been
Two armies on the trampled shores
That death flows black between.
One marches to the drum-beat’s roll,
The wide-mouth clarion’s bray.
And bears upon a crimson scroll,
“Our glory is to slay.”
One moves in silence by the stream ;
With sad. yet watchful eyes.
Calm as the patient planet’s gleam
That walks the clouded skies.
Aloug its front no sabres shine,
No blood-red pennons wave ;
Its banner bears the single line,
“Our duty is to»save.”
For those no death-bed’s lingering shade;
At Honor’s trumpet-call,
With knitted brow and lifted blade.
In Glory’s arm they falL
For these no flashing falchions bright,
No stirring battle-cry;
The bloodless stabber calls by night—
Each answers, “Hsre am II”
For these the sculptor’s laurels bust,
The builder's marble piles.
The anthem’s dealing o’er their dust
Through long cathedral aisles.
For these the blossom-sprinkled turf
That floods the lonely graves,
When Spring rolls in her sea-green surf
In flowery-foaming waves.
Two paths lead upward from below,
And angels .wait above.
Who count each burning life-drop’s flow,
Fa/»h falling tear of Love.
Though from the Hero’s bleeding breast
Her pulses Freedom drew.
Though the while lillies in her crest
Sprang from that scarlet dew—
While Valor’s haughty champions wait
Till all their scars are shown,
Love walks unchallenged through the gat*,
To sit beside tile throne!

(SAVANNAH, October 1st, 1866.
THE J. B CARY t CO.’S
“NONPAREIL FRENCH GUANO”
W HICH Is now offered to Planters possesses quali
ties which are peculiar to it alone, and render it
far superior to any other known, as 'has been fully
proven by the “French Academy of Sciences,” and
also by practical persons of enlarged experience iu
every department of Agriculture.
Among the meritorious qualities which peculiarly
distingatth the ■■ Nonpareil French Guano,” may be
enumerated the following:
1st. It trill promote tbs growth of Oottou. Cora. To
bacco, or any kind of groin or vegetable, equal to A

tested, at Mas asms tints being entirely free from the

nent Improver of the Boil, instead of s stimulant.
2d. It osn be applied to th* leave* as well ss the
toots of plants, without shy danger of burning them,
if used properly, and w# guarantee that wherever ap
plied the soil wffl retain its moisture, and will not
bake, even the mostytaysj.
3d. it will prevent Worms or Insects from destroy
ing either plant or groin, and wherever it is applied
every kind of worm or insects will instantly dieap
pear, its properties being repugnant to insect life ol
every kind. This quality alone will be a great benefit
to agriculture when It la estimated what vast numbers,
as Southern planters know, have lost their crop by in
sect depredations.
In a circular it is impossible to-fully enter into the
merits of the " Nonpareil French Guano." but we as
sure the public that ws have not exaggerated, and it
only remains for those interested to test its value,
when we feel confident that it will rapidly supercede
all other*.

Gents: As to the action or tbs Fertilizer, I have
been highly gratified. IU effects have been very dis
tinct at every stage or the crop, and its propristare
have been peculiarly fortunate In the production
ol a Fertilizer that is equally beneficial on earn
and cotton. It is quite stimulating aud yet mild,
possessing the advantage of guano (Peruvian)
in the first, and superior to It In being free from
the licatiug, burning effect, so disastrous In a daoath.
My experience to that this American guauo la too
slow iu its act! na lot Torn, but it is axcelhal
ton. This arises from the fact that the AmerlcAu va
rieties, as they are knowu, possess more of the phoe-

An you nre aware, the past seasoa with na was aa-

drouth—commencing in June—the latter fetal gsa-
erally to manured crops. 1 applied the Bureka to a
field of thfrtv acres of cotton, two tons to ths field,
being about one hundred and forty pounds to the
acre. The field (stubble) was broken dp well, and
the Phosphate driUdd by h nd in layingoff to ridge.-
Several rows wcre"left without IN application to teat
it. The difference between these rows and the bal
ance of tee field could he discerned a considerable
distance all the summer, and plainly so In gathering
the crop. And I am confident that the Phosphateoa
the thirty acres lias paid me fifty percent.
I applied a ton of the Phosphate to corn, after

sult In the growing of the coru was Ihesame. In
order, however, to -make a thorough feat of It with
other Fertilizers, Cjupfiifred PiAffriap Guano and

no (0 one acre of corn, superintending it in person,
and the Phosphate to two ceres by the side of the

fourth leas of the Peruvlau. The result was that the
Phosphate equaled the Peruvian Guano, the eat* of

Messes. F. W. SIMS A OO., Savannah. Ga:
Gentlemen: Your favor or tbe 20th ultimo did not,
reach me until after my return from Savannah.
It gives me pleasure to communicate th* result of
my eXjieiience with the Bureka Phosphate of Urns.
1 applied ationt three thousand pounds of It on too
acres of very poor land. 1 am satisfied that the land ,
would not have made more than lonr thousand
pounds of seed cotton, and perhaps (this ysar) not "
more than three thousand. I have already galhsred
about nix thousand pounds, aud may get five hun
dred more. Ths May oti these nacres fras very far
from the sartoee. about (wo feet.; AUdltt clay been
within six inches of the surface, I believe that 1
should have made near nine hundred pounds to the
acre. r ‘ i
Thu “ Eureka Phosphate of Lime” is (according to,
u>y observation) much more stimulating than Poro-
vlaa Guano, especially when applied un corn. I ap
plied one barrel (250 pound*) ou one sere and a half
of corn. Tbe production did not half equal tfae pro-*
mine which the corn made dui lug the first six weeks.
Had the same uuaattiy been applied to the corn In
broken doses, I beliovethe product would have been
double what n was. Th« corn eras planted In the
same kiud of laud that -the cotton was, and at the
end uf six weeks was three times as high aa aora
adjoining, four feet and a half. Had I then applied
more of tbe same manure it would bare made an
overwhelming crop. But I had none of it left.
1 believe that my land, which would make six ban-
dred pounds of seed cotton, with the clay not ex
ceeding six inches from iho surface, could be mad* to
produce twelve hundred pounds by applying three
hundred pounds-of this Fertilizer. Aad I think it
would be besttorunsshallowniiTOw.eBrlnkle about
two hiiuilied-pmmfih'per acre is the-furrow, and
cover it up Immediately with a small Scotch or shovel
plow. This should be done immediately pot
ting io the seed. When the cotton is ready forJEBe
second or third working, about the first or middle of
June, run a small plow near the cotton and sprinkle
in that furrow about one hnndred ponnus muse to
the acre, and com it imnedtatolf. I think by pur
