The same number of the Republican contains
a card from Hon. T. M. Furlow, Mayor of
Americas, in-reference to midnight meeting
and drillings of armed bodies recently held in
the vicinity of that city. Mr. 'Fi
that having investigated the matter,
vinced that the purpose and frequency of the
meeting!held at Americas have been misappre
hended and exaggerate A He is assured by
blacks and whites that the meetings
not held for drilling, but for the purpose o_ ^
organizing Union or Grant Clubs, and that in
future they will be held in the day time and
without arms. Commenting, on the Mayors
card, the editor says: “that the object for
which these meetings were held, may have
been misconstrued, is very probable, but that
they met and drilled, armed with muskets, can
be proven by those who were in the ranks.”
Whatever may have been the character and
purposes of the midnight assemblages of the
negrpes of Americas—whether they met to
study military, drilf or to listen to the. incen
diary teachings of the villainous white carpet
baggers and. scalawags who, fo£ their own
selfish purposes, are by the basest falsehood
and appeals to their unreasoning passions cn
deavoriug to array them in hostility to the
whites it is very certain that the political
demonstration in Webster county bodes no
good. The sentiments boldly uttered by the
speakers at that meeting have their origin in
the wicked teachings of white miscreants, who
are to-day busy throughout Georgia, in our
cities, in,our towns and our country disfri

It will be seen that, the Georgia and Liver
pool Line is to consist of seven first-class new
iron Clyde-bnilt steamships, named respec
tively the Savannah, Salilla, Waverly, Leith,
Sterling, Riga and Dou. These ships, under
the command of experienced captains, will
commence their regular trips between Savan
nah and Liverpool direct on the 15tb of No
vember next, sailing regularly thereafter
tbe first and fifteenth of each month.
The ships are of ample tonnage, with pas
senger accommodations,-' and in every re
spect adapted to the trade npon which they
are about to enter. By them through
freights will be taken- to and from all points
in Great Britain, the Continent, and the
Southern Slates, giving through bills of
lading. This arrangement will afford un
usual facilities to shippers and importers
throughout those sections of country in rail
road communication with Savannah, and
cannot fail to concentrate here a large por
tion of the existing commerce, and greatly
to increase the direct trade between the
Southern States and Europe.
The Macgregor Line of Steamships sup
plies what has long been needed—direct
steam communication between our port .and
Liverpool—and we congratulate our citizens
on the final consummation of an enterprise
which promises such important benefits to
our CLy and State. Savannah, now one of
the largest, and with her rapidly extend
ing railroad connections, soon to become the
largest receiving and shipping cotton port in
the South, has been well selected as' the
South Atlantic point-of embarkation for tbe
-commerce which is not only to sustain, but

First, the Government closes the M

Queen’s birthday and Christmas. Then the
(jnurch comes wilh holidays. The Hindoos
have eleven days of feasting or fasting, the
Parsees twenty-two, the Mnhammedansisev-
enteen, the Jews eleven. Tbe Hindoo festi
vals are too intricate to be described, too
childish to be comprehended. The Hindoo
theology is marvelons in its absurdity. Their
first great festival of the year is on the 12 th
of Jaauary, on which the sun enters the sign
Makar in their zodiac—an animal with the
bead and face of an antelope and the' body
and tail of a fish. From that day to the 21st
of Jane the gates of Heaven are open and
whoever dies, if he is a good Hindoo, oan
gain immediate entrance .to ' Paradise.—
During the remainder of,the year they-are
shut, ana all who die most -'wait till
tbe snn gets round to the proper sign
in the circle before they Can join the
blessed. So tbe day is hailed with great re
joicings and ceremonies, pilgriaiages to the
rivers and the sea, washings and bathings,
rubbing their bodies with sessama seed, the
favorite grain of the sun; making large pre
sents of money and ^Mi&'M&'&pper vessels
to the priests, who. in tarn give * benedic
