Walking Match.—Robert Skepper, the
'British pedestrian, has finished his arduous
task of walking from Winchester to Farham
and hack, fifty six miles, for twenty succes
sive days. This feat is, we believe, the
greatest of the kind ever performed in Eng
land or any other country.
Cooper’s Patent Rotative Fire Engine.—
During the last week we had the pleasure
of witnessing an exhibition of one of Messrs
Cooper, PHni.rs &. Campbell’s Fire En
gines—and we do not remember having ever
witnessed a more perfect application of
power for raising and throwing water. The that it has been found necessary to send a sealed in a separate piece of paper, which will ie-
large body of troops against them. The m " n u ”°P erie “ tin toe selection is made,
government finds the greatest difficulty in ct ° cr2;
Engine in question was hastily made, and
Mr. Cooper suggested many improvements
which they intend making as to applicaiion
of power, but, in the actual height and dis
tance to which the water was thrown,
there was no mistake.—The Engine is a-
bout 13 inches in length and 11 inches in
diameter and weighs without the crank or
mounting, about two hundred pounds. It
is mounted upon a carriage about 8 feet
long, on each side of which are cranks con
nected by chains in such a manner ns to ap
ply the power to the gudgeons of the En
gine. The cistern holds about 140 gallons.
There arc four pipes with nine discharging
apperturCs—three of which can he opened
at once, presenting the novel sight of three
distinct columns of water rising to the height
of 60 or 70 feet, and reaching in distance
about 100. The diameter of the three
discharging pipes [when the three are used]
is five inches, and seven eighths of an
inch. When but one stream was thrown
the size and height was varied in propor
tion to the size of the apportures. The
smallest was one and a sixteenth inch, and
the column was thrown about SO feet high
and 110 distant, 130 gallons of water was
thrown in 26 seconds. The second was one
and three eighths of an inch diameter, th
column thrown about seventy feet in height
and about 150 distant, and 130 gallons of wa
ter discharged in 21 seconds. The third was
one and Tseven eighths of an inch diameter,
the column [and it was truly a column]
thrown about 40 feet high and 60 feet diam
eter, and 130 gallons discharged in 15 se
conds. There were two other discharging
appertures of a larger size which were not
opened as they are calculated for use only
when a large quantity of water is to be dis
charged without regard to force. The weight
of the whole engine including every thing is
about 500 pounds. The power applied was
20 men with seven inches lever, in all the
experiments, but we ara told that half that
number will discharge 500 gallons per mi
nute through the third pipe and raise the wa
ter 25 feet.
We have oftentimes witnessed specimens
of ingenuity and enterprise of our Green
Mountain Boys, but we have never as yet
seen any tiling which in external appearance
promised so little, and which in practice
performed so much. The company we un
derstand have becn at great expense in per
fecting it and we heartily wish them a liber
al compensation.—i-One of the Engines is

that the evil complained of was the conse

The last advices from Lisbon, represent
the state of that capital as feverish and un
settled. The ebullition of popular feeling*
which hurst forth ou the removal of Saldan-
ha, had subsided, but we may infer that the
factious were still active, from the arrests
which continued to take place.
A private letter of the 4th inst. mentions
that the number of persons actually arrested
amounts to sixty: but that there are orders
for the arrest of about two hundred.
The Princess Regnet was expected to ar

a guard of honour to her Royal Highness.’
The main body of the British troops was

Shaw & Edwards, that the subscriber’s interest
in the business ceases from the present date: his
future views now render it important to close all ac
counts which may have arisen during his transac
tion of business, jointly and individually: therefore,
persons indebted to him are particularly requested to
attend to their final adjustment without delay. An
early attention to this request will remove from him
the necessity of resorting to legal measures, which
further delinquency on the part of many will impe
riously demand. OLIVER P. SHAW.
