The correspondent of the New York Her
ald at Belize, Honduras, writes that the In
dians made an attack on the town of Peten
on tbe 3d ult, and that the inhabitants of
the place, after firing a few shots at the
savages, fled in great confusion. The scene
that eaaaed is truly heartrending to de
tente. The frightened citizens, of all ages
and sexes, half clad, and many of them
without food, were, at last accounts, indis
criminately huddled together; and as if to
add to their deplorable condition, the rain
was pouring upon them in torrents. Par-
ante and children became seperated in the
excitement of the retreat, and it was feared
.that many had been drowned. At Bacalar,
on the30th Oct., the Indians were surround
ing the town; in addition to which, it had
bean raining for fifteen days, and it was
supposed that water had fallen to the depth
ten n level. At Belize it had also
ally for twenty-three days.
Numerous lives had teen lost, and the crops
an# stash throughout the oountry were ml-
■oik destroyed. The Indians bid fair to
ssssptete the work of destruction. No wea-
d*r that tho people arc ia utter despair. .
