Bhiioi* Pikkci: proachod at the meth
od ist church on last Sunday night,
from Acts XI -22,23. After a few per
tinent remarks on the duty of all
Christians !o spread tbo gospel, tbo
nature and nuod of religious revivals
and the success of tho primitive church
achieved by this moans, tho Bishop
dwelt at length upon tho latter vorso of
'bis text, urging full consecration to
Clod as tin! condition of a consistent
anil useful religious life. Although
tho sermon was not remarkable for
the animation and eloqucnco so clmr-
actoristic of this great preacher, it was
full of fine thoughts, godly counsol
and <arnest exhortation, and was em
inently nppropiato as a sequel to tho
recont sorvices at tho church.
Bishop Pierco is now sixty-threo
years of ago but does not look so old;
is full of vigor, and is indefatigablo in
zeal and effort. His life, thus far, has
been ono of success. Heavou sond us
more like him.
General Oclqi*it and Col. Bob Als
ton, of Atlanta, will dolivor addresses
boforo the Grango and Agriculurai
club at Codartowu on tho 1st of Au
gust. Tho rubject will bo direct trade,
tho South’s salvation. Lot all coino
and hear theso good and ablo men
speak words of truth and soberness.
Wo learn from Mr. John S. Vann,
of Priors Station, that two men fell
from tho fourth of July excursion
train from Selma to Atlanta, on its
return, near Romo. One, who was
deputy sheriff of Talladega, was killed,
breaking his neck in tho full. Tho
other was alive when last heard from,
but with no hopo of recovery.
Whisky, tbo basis of all sclfdistrnc-
tion, was tho cause of tho calamity.
The protracted meeting at tho
Methodist church, is still in progress.
Rev. LaPrado labors incessantly, and
and not without fruits. Ho has worn
himself out apparently and still is
zealoas. Ho indeed is a minister of
whom his church may be justly proud,
and has greutly endeared himself to
all denominations in our community.
The StCharles Hotel is going to have
a well. Judging from tbo henp of dirt
wo see thrown out, water is close at
hand. This will bo a great convin-
enco for the StCharles. Success to it.
John C. Allen got the Jail job, at
$7,8G5. Ho is tho very man to put
it through with dispatch, and mako a
good job of it. Mr. Allen is one of
the most successful and faithful con
tractors and builders in tho State.
Cedartown is indebted to bim for
many of her most elegant buildings.
He is industrious, makes money and
invests it in building up the town.
What Cedartown needs. —Wo wish
to speak of somo thiugs that would
add greatly to tho social aud intellec
tual advantages of our town.
First, a library association properly
conducted, and warmly supported is
a chief diaidcratuin of a progressive
poople, because it not only awakens a
thirst for knowledge, but also affords
to every ono all tho advantages and
facilities tho combiuod wisdom and
means of tho whole comunity can af
ford, for tho acquisition of knowledge.
No ono of our citizens enjoys a tithe
of what it affords. A plaoo in which
tho standard historical and scientific
authors of tho world may bo consult-
o.l, aud tho curreut litoraturo of tho
day can bo had, would certainly be
ono of attraction
Tho money wo all pay out yearly
for a scanty supply of tho sources of
iuformatiau would establish such an
institution Imndsomly, together with
a neat reading room for tho ncoomc-
dation of tho society.
Tho citizens would doutloss aid tho
young men in the undertaking liberal
ly, let a mooting bo called, and the
young men go to work to build them
n nice house, with debating hall and
library and reading room combined.
Wo might have also a lino military
company, that would do honor to any
place or people. We have men frosli
from tho battle field to instruct the
young in this art, and this organiza
tion would bring us that other accom
plishment of society, namely, a brass
band. Who is tho mail that has no
music in his soul?
It would bo an easy matter to liavo
thoso evidences of a flourishing town,
if somebody would load off. Come
you lovers oflitoruturc, military honors
and music, hero is ail opportunity to
elevate yoursi Ires, your town aud
people aud doing something worthy
of your ambition. Homebody break
the ice.
Mr 3.min 11 \nd, brother <3 Wiley
Hand, killed a blue Crane in a pond
in his brothers Hold in this place, on
yesterday morning. It measured six
feet from tij» to lip, aud Jive feet two
and a half inches in length.

The New York Express says that with
so much capital scattered all over tho
country, and interest so low on all mon
ey put out on call, with the grain crops
full of promise, and tho cotton crops
to be, iu all probability, far more than
wo anticipated six weeks since, there
is every reason to hopo for a better
state of business in the coming autumn
than the country bus enjoyed iu acy
season for tho two years past.
