Successful Merchants aro those who
have advertise in somo way. Advertise

uocssry to success. Where advertising
does no direct benefit—if such a thing

Business iu mink skins was pretty
lively on Monday. Mr. Ed Gibson,
of Romo, was in Town buying up
peas, rags and mink-skins. Our friend
John Jones, on flic lookout fur a spec
ulation, conceived the idea of buying
up all tho skins and sell them to Mr.
Gil. m for a profit. Ho found ono,
a small ono, at Mr. Wynn’s, which ho
purchased for seventy-five cents, "cal
culating” that ho would make ubout
fifty coots profit on it. But in driving
a trade with Mr. Gibson, fifty ccntx
was tho very most ho could got.
John said it was only a joke—ho
did’nt buy tho mink-skin any how.
Tho truth is, ho was sold out, cheap.
He says when they movo down to tho

Liquor Traffic ahull bo decided by voto
of all entitled to ballot who reside
within tho incorporate limits of Co-
dartowu, I desire, through your col
umns, to answer such objections as
have been made to Restriction. I
slmll not hero discuss thogonoral top
ic of tho evils of intemperance, bc-
cuuso said evils, groat nnd ntimorous,
nro universally admitted to bo among
us ns a people; nor do l propose to
say anything about tho beuullts that
might fiow from State, or National,
Restriction Laws, as that is not the
question now at issue. Aud in dis
cussing tho immediate) question of
Restriction at Cedariown, I shall, at
prosent, coniine myself to tho matter
of offered objections. Tho first ono l
have heard has framed itsilf in the
following form : Tho passage of a
Restriction Law will make it necessa
ry for tho Council to lax tho Town
for tho support id its institutions,
whereas, if there is no such law, tho
amount of liconso money paid by
Liquor Dealers, will cover all necos-
sara expenses, without luxation. 1
believe that is a fair st dement of the
I'cvcnuc argument.
Last year tho sum of eight hundred
dollars ($800), being a tux of 1-10 of
ono per cent, on property valued at
two hundred thousand dollars, was
deemod sufficient to covor all munici
pal t xponseH. I am informed by com
petent judges, that two hundred and
twenty-live thousand dollars will not
cover tho amount of taxable property
now in Cedariown Outside of ceme
tery and side walk improvements—
tho funds for which will be raised in a
manner not to bo affected by the
Liquor qmstion—tho Council, it is
reasonable to suppose, will not at
tempt anything that eight hundrod
dollars will not cover, if tho money is
to be raised by taxation. A tax of
three dollars and fifty-six cunts ($3 50)
on every thousand dollars will bo suf
ficient to raise that sum. (Of com h a
this eslimnlo hr not authoritative.)
Tho average voter docs not own more
than ouo thoustnd dollars iu town
pro[ orty. Willi him, then, this is tho
argument : "1 admit t hat great evils
fiow from tho Whisky Traffic; that it
is Injurious to tho morals of the town;
that dram-drinking keeps poor men
always poor; that it starves womon
and children and keeps them clothed
iu rags ; that it fills our j iils, takes
productive men from their business
and puts them iu tho jury-box, unit
b’.res the. county to pay their fm ; that
it ruins credit, consumes cash, incites
disorder, separates friends, encourages
enmitk's and draws blood. It is pos
sible that J, and curtain that others,
will spend at tho Bar Room, during
tho year, moro than ten times the
amount of my town lax-money, loo,
that my wife and children neod. J
admit all this—und yet, rather than
pay my $3 GO, moro or less, I’ll voto
againit Restriction.” Think of it, my
fellow-voter. Perhaps you never
thought of it that way before. Go
put the evils you ailmiL to foil 1 -: front
the truffle in one fcculo, and your town
tux in tho other, und then vote as you
honestly think you ought.
1 Imvo the testimony of tho cash
merchants of Cedariown that tho
trade injures tlioir business'. Mer
chants who oredit toll mo thill they
are not willing to credit men who
drink whisky, and that they are not
so willing to credit customers who
lmvo been dram-drinkers iu tho past,
if tho temptation is always before
them—they fear the rosult. Ouo
leading merchant assuros mo that
nearly all his bud accounts can be
traced to whisky drinking. "My led
ger,’’ says he, "is a strong argument
against intern porance.” Ho much for
the financial question involved iu tho
issuo of tho corning vole.
Another argument- -so-cnlle —is
this : L’nles dealers bo allowed to sell
liquor in town, they will sell itoutsido
tho incorporation. Wo can control
riots ; tlio country people cannot.
Our planting interests will sutler if wo
pass Restriction Laws in town. I am
sorry to see that ono of our county
papers falls into this lino of bad logic.
Mr. Gibson is not tho only citizen who
honestly thinks that it is question of
choico between Liquor in town and
Liquor iu tho country. It never seems
to occur to them thattho same legislat
ive nactmcnt in accordance witli which
tho coming ballot has been called for,
provides that a ximilar vole may lx: ta
ken in any dint riel in J J ollJ county.
What is to hinder tho country people
from driving it out of tho country, if
wo drive it from tho town ? I am as
sured by farmers that if we will drivo
it from us they will "keep it going.’
Our farmers arc too fond of good or
der, and too keenly alive to their in-’
terests, to permit whisky to bo sold
ubout their premises when there is a
remedy at band. Oho farmer—liv
ing outsido of "Town protection”—
says. "I’ll venture the assoition that
nine-tenths of the land-holders in tho
subject. Habitual drunkards may cou-
tiuuo to drink, whether whisky is Bold
in tho community or not; but occa
sional drinkers, and tho youth, will ho
