Tho Millodgovillo Recorder, in dos-
c ribing tho tornado Bays : "To tho w< sf
cf tho city a whirlwind, which looked
like tho huge unoko Block of n loco
motive, from which issued him k
srooke, spreading out and upward to
tho sky, Boomed to bo cpprorching tho
city rapidly, carrying death and des
truction in its march. Tho whirlwind
Boomed to como from the northwest
till it pf»H«od south of tho town, when
when a sudden current changed its
course and it cnrno back, now travel-
oil in a northoaat course, and toward
tho touthcr n par of tho city."
A correspondent of tho Augusta
Chroniclo and Hentino! says ho con
versed with fifty pcoplo of Hancock,
Warren and MeDuflio counties who
Baw the northern oyclouo. Tho most
intelligent among them agreed that
it was eylindoriual in slmpo, rau imme
diately along tho ground, was half a
inilo wide at tho base, and half a mile
high, in tho distance, and when ap
proaching, it looked like a vast column
of black smoko Mining from a pino
forest on fire. As it appre ftcliod it was
dimly illuminated with a phosphores
cent light, whilst in it, ns one man
graphically said, “Micro appeared to
bo a million matches struck." These
lights were from tho electricity. Tho
horizon and sky woro everywhere over
cast with other dense clouib. From
these tho storm cloud stood out ns
boldly an any woll-druwn picture from
its background. It was not accompa
nied by thunder. It traveled all of
uovonty miles an hour. Tho roaring,
appalling noiso it produced washy tho
Minim causes that tho noise of cannon
balls aro mado Hying through tho air.
Tho tornado camo from tho west and
wont to tho northwest.
Tho tornado started in Harris coun
ty about 11 o’clock, a, in., and left tho
stnto about 11 p. m., traversing about
210 miles in three hours, making the
velocity seventy miles per hour.
Tho storm entered Georgia from
Leo county, Ala., into Harris county,
and passing through Talbot, Upson,
Monron, Jones, Unldwin, Hancock,
Warren, MeDuflio, and Columbia,
thonco Into Kdgolluld, S. O. II tho
roador will luku a lulu and lay it
upon a map of Georgia, s looting any
two given points touched by tho cy
clone, he will see that it traveled in a
lino as straight ns a cannon hull or a
crow would lly. Tho l ulu would point
west through Alabama, Mississippi,
Louisiana North of Now Orleans, and
run into the gulf of Mexico hetweou
Hint city nml Galveston. All the cy
clones and hurricanes that pass over
Georgia aro bred in that gulf.
There seems to have been two dis
tinct oyclouos. After they passed
Milludgovillo, they run like two race
horses, tho Boullurn going almost duo
cast from west, and the nor; horn from
west lo a little north of eabU 11 cross
ed tho Ogctchoo at the L .ztnby plan
tation, fifteen miloo south of Muyilold.
All accounts are ngl'ucd that each one
crossed that slioam between twelve
and ono o'clock Saturday afternoon.
Tho second or more Hout lioru oyclouo
was tho exact counterpart of tho oth
er. Tho Mimo black cloud, tho phos
phorus, tho electric sparks, thocylhi-
doricnl drape, tho widdi, tho height h,
and tho roaring, hustling Bound, as of
a thousand shell.s Hying over a bom
barded city. On a boo lino these cy
clones wove lift ecu miles apart. Each
ran na straight an an arrow, and gov
erned by some groat 1 aw ns yot little
understood. Ono went by Cniuak,
Thompson tuul Appling into IaIgo-
field, S. 0. Tho other wont by Glass
cock, JetVorsru and Richmond couu-
tios, and crossed tho Savannah river
ton or twelve miles below Augusta,
and went to 1 leech Island, S. t\
Iu Harris county, when Major lveii-
non approucheil tho place whole his
house had stood, ho saw his wife's
body lying in a ditch, terribly man
gled uni lifeless. llo had scarcely
seen this horribl • sight before he
viewed tho dead boilius of several of
his chil lreu lying near tho same spot.
This was about 150 yards from tho
site of tho house. Tho bodies had
been torn out from tho ruins by tho
s'.ovro and carried to this distance.
Tho clothing was almost completely
torn oft* of some of them, and nearly
oft were so terribly mangled and dis
figured as not to l»u recognized.
Two of the dead children worn girls
in tho beauty of young womanhood;
ono was n little infant, and was terri
bly crushed by tbo falling timbers,
lu some places jvople who were ovt r-
takeu by tho stirm lay upcu tho earth
uud dung to saplings for safety. Same
i f these Hived life, but had nearly all
their clothing torn oft' of them.
Tho bills of several houses was
blown os far as forty yards. Ono of
tho r-.ills of Mr. Kennon'shouso is said
to bavo blown into n hickory tree, ns
if it had boon driven theyo by a hugo
hammer.
At Mr. Rradshaw's a boy was fixed
to a wardrobe by bis hood, tho splint
ers piercing into tho back part of bis
nook, ond holding him up. His
weight pullt d his body down so that
the whole of tho back part of his scalp
was taken off. It is thought that tho
boy will recover.
Near Mr. Konnon’u a shoot was
blown into tho top of n tree, and is
still there waving as a flag of truco
to tho angry dements.
At tho house of John Morgan was
tho most perfect nnd complete des
truction. Evon tho floor Split wide
open, and all uhovo except a small hit
of a shed room gone. Mrs. Morgan
was standing on tho back porch fac
ing tho death-deuling monster ap
proaching with moro rapidity than
horso over flew around tho courso.
Bho only had timo to turn and make
perhaps ono step towards a main door
Then midnight blackness, a crash, a
crash, a roar—it was gone 1 Hut for
ftvo hundred yards in front lay her
just now beautiful residence, broken,
splinlorod, crushed, with portions of
roof, tiinborn, sash, blinds, bed cloth
ing, fly ing through tho air. In tho
contro of tho building were four chil
dren. Not ono was killed I Ono lit-
girl was blown into a cupboard, and
of all the furniture in tho house, that
was tho only piece not broken into
kindling wood I Tho next hoiibo
at ruck was that of Jamos A. ILusou.
Mr. JJ. was in Columbia county, but
bis wife ami six little children word at
home. Liko all the rest, the house
camo down, burying all in ono com
mon ruin. To add to the horror, if
mi) thing can bo added more horri
ble, the house took on fuel One
ewcot little haho lmd just been rocked
to i.l< op by its mother, uud was lying
iu its cradle. The timbors fill every
where except upon tho iunoeont
couch. Tho mother Hcramblul forth,
and soon had reason to thai.k God
that her every child was sUmling
around her not much hurt.
A npocimon wreck was that of the
plantation of John K .Smith. It was
the most beautiful home iu McDiifti >
county. Tho houso was double, two-
stories high, with un ell. The cyclone
struck the southeast angle, ripped oil'
half tho roof, knocked down half tho
plastering, entered tho room, eumshod
tho partition walls, seized the entire
north aide of the whole edifice, und
holding lliia na u trophy, together
with the entire contents of the soound
story, passed on with the rapidity of
a winged racer. Mr. 8rait.li, his wife
and six ehildien, lmd time lo run into
tho hall below. That hull was left
intact. Tho family could huvo scarce
ly stood auothor portion of tho whole
house without being killed outright.
Tho house of Mrs. Watson, iu Mc-
Dufilo county, was iu tho direct cen
tre of tho track. The slot iu approach-
id to one bundled yards, dost reiving
every troo iu its wake. There it jump
ed over her houso and camo again to

molition. It is said that an old ne
gro woman when sho saw it coming
picstietid hem If and said, “Lord,
Thy will ho done."
Tho face of every pors.n who camo
in contact with the cloud was black
ened. Various persons tried to ac
count for this. Tin y said it was im
possible for enough soot to ho gather
ed along the track to do this, and aro
ef the opinion that it was iu tho na

Among our most vigorous und bent
known iusttiulions, tho Mubilo Life
Insurance Company htands in tho
front rank. Though it is comparatively
of recent origin, yet its ileatly growth
its sure foundation, its list of solid di
rectors und its prudent corps of mnn-

life and render the state of compara
tive povorty one not to ho dreaded.
A portion of tho monthly or yearly
salary is laid aside for the insurance,
and tin n the remainder iu frua lo he
used for present comfort. Thus tho
burden is easily borne. It is only a
fraction of the earnings, and ho does
not feel it, while at the saiuo time liu

loved ones aro provided for. 'i’o all
who are disposed to be prudent nnd
economical, tho plana of tho Mobile

The Important Subject
Of Life Insnamco is gradually and
deservedly gaining public attention by
tho force of its own merits. The timo
in not far distant wlion tho death of a
man leaving his family unprovided
for by a policy of Life Assurance, will
leave the stain of ih gketed duly upon
his character. It is a duty which ev
ery one owes to his own dependents
and to the community. Ho who neg
lects it is not a good husband, father
or citizen. Ho has no right even to
risk thu.chance, of throwing tho future
support of his fatuiiy, in case of his
death, on the community at large, or
on relatives and friends, when it is in
his power so easily to provide against
bUi’h coulipgcucks.
