We learn that tho Mesers Hall

from Rockmnrt to their saw mill place
about completed, and will soon lay
tho track. Distance from Rockmnrt
about two miles, which will leave a
gap of about eleven miles to finish.
Considerable corn has been planted
in this county. Prom a.l tho infor
mation wo con get on the subject,
tho wheat crop is promising, and more
land has boon planted in wheat than
last year. If nothing happens be
tween this aud harvest, a large crop
may bo expected.
Mr. Edmondson has opend a board

streets, in Mr. John Allen’s new build
ing, where those wishing to procure
board can bo occomraodutcd. Wo
will give more particulars next week,

Yesterday Qua Spratliu was nr-

fined. Gus. scut a little cussiu mes
sage to sister Lena, whorcupon said
Lena appeared beforo Gus. in person,
whon ho reiterated his cussiu with a

Captain GrifYoth, who emigrated to
Dallas, Texas, a short tirao since, re
turned last woek on business, but
remained only one day. lie is high
ly pleased with his new homo, aud
says Northern Texas is tho finost sec
tion of couutry ho over saw. Hopo
he may contiuuo to bo pleased, and
that he may be successful in his bus
iness undertakings. No doubt our
readers would bo pleased to read,
through our columus, what ho thiuks
about Texas, and wo suggest that ho
writ© us a letter, for publication, oc
casionally.
Farmers, do you want uu antidote
for grassy cotton ? Go to Wright’s
and get a hoe. Ho has an assortment.
Read communication in reference
to tho wltihky question. Wo think it
should sottlo tho question as to how
every ouo should voto in tho coming
election.
llarbur & Wood tiro receiving their
uew spring goods. They hrvo a splou-
did stock of shoes just opened, and
they proposo to sell them low down.
Give them a call.
Wo are grieved to hoar of tho death
of tho wifo of Jtnlgo W. C. Harbor,
which occurred on last Saturday
morning, of consumption. Tho loss’of
a wifo is, indeed, a sad aflliction, and
must bo hard to bear, but God, who
doeth all things well, knows what is
best for us. Tho stricken husband
and children have our hearty sympa
thies.
Mr. N M Wright has returned from
market, aud is now receiving and
opouing n splondcd assortment of
spring goods.
J. 8. Stubbs At Co. bavo just open
ed a very fmo assortment of spring
and summer shoes, which they pro
pose to sell lower than over beforo
siuco the war. As an illustration, a
shoo that has heretofore sold for
throe dollars, they now prico at two
twenty-five. Hut don’t lake our word
for it. Go aud see for yoursolvcs.
Fiilur & Wood aro receiving a
great many nice goods for tho ladies.
We have been placod under obliga
tions to lion. Wm. II. Felton, M. (’.
from this district, for a copy of tho
grout speech of Senator Norwood on
the r< solution in llio United States
Senate to admit Pinohback, as Sena
tor front Louisiana. It is a masterly
effort, and wo shall print somo ex
tracts from it noxt week.
Wo aro wearing a pair of Harbor &
Wood's now stylo, low-heeled shoos.
They aro good, comfortable shoes, and
they sell thorn cheap.
On yesterday afternoon Maaslml
Wilkes and his assistants, J. R. Har.
her, Jud. Hrabb, Jim Clary, Ferret
Harbor and another small dog, wont
round town on a rat-killing expedi
tion. Friday being considered an
unlucky day, and not a good day for
rat killing eithor, they only killed 217.
The universal prico of a good lead
pencil, a largo box of blacking, and
a hundred other small articles, has al
ways boon ten coots. Win. M. Phil
lips proposes to change tho order of
things iu that respect, and sell these
ten cents articles for live coots, iu tho
future. In fact ho proposes to put
down tho prico of everything ho tolls.
Ife says ho can and will sell goods as
cheap and cheaper lnan they can got
them in Romo. His object is to got
our peoplo to discoutinuo tho practice
of running off to I tome to spend thoir
money, under the delusive idea that
they can (get better bargains. Ilis
object is a laudiblo ono, and wo hopo
ho may succeed. His success in this
direction will bo to the interest of all
our merchants, as well as their cus
tomers.
The small-pox excitement has about
subsided. We talked with Mr. John
son, of Cave Spring, Thursday, on tho
subject, and ho says it is doubted
whether the parties who were report
ed as having tho diseas, have it a) all.
If they really have the disease, no
danger of its spreading is apprehend
ed. No new cases at Tocamsoh iu the
last ton days or two weeks. We
| think that, with proper precaution
tho spread of tho disease will bo stop,
ped, and Cedartowu escape. Wo learn
that the report has gone out in some
sections of the couuty tbut there were
twenty-fonr cases in town. Not one
word of it so. Cedartowu is as clear
of tho disease, und about as likely to
remain so, as any other portion of the
county. Fay no attention to these
I reports. If it does break out litre,
somo ono will he stationed on each
! road leading into to town, to inform
those coining in of the fact.
Wo learned, from Col. Stouo, on
Thursday, that a difficulty occurred
iu Rookranrt, on last Saturday, iu
which marshal Iliggiun got cut in tho
log aud jaw with a knife, and but for
tho timely intorferenco of Porter Dou-
preo, would have beou killed. It seems
that a row was gotten up in a ton piu
alloy, betwoeu a Mr. Pruitt (who was
under the iufluonco of mean whisky)
and a Mr. St atom, Thou. Morgan, a
brother of Pruitt’s, aud perhaps somo
others. While in tho discharge of his
duty as marshal, iu trying to rostoro
ordor, Mr. Higgins was cut, as abovo
stated, by ouo of tho Pruitt’s. Tho
parties implicated were all arrested,
except one of tho Pruitt’s, who made
his escape, and tried beforo tho May
or. Pruit was fined fifty dollar, Stat-
oui twenty-five and Morgan five.
Mary Ann Dowling so lovod James
Dolan ns to go into Sing Sing, New
York, to marry him. Wonder what
our young men would do to have their
sweethearts so lovo them ?
Wo learn from Mr. McConnell that
work on the railroa«y between Mari
etta and Canton is being pushed for
ward rndidly, somo threo hundred
hands being employed. Tho work
had been stopped for some time, from
the lack of money aud supplies, but
tho country people wont to work aud
got up aud contributed provisions
(they raise their own hog and hom
iny up there) to feed tho hnnds, and
so tho road is likely to bo completed
to Canton at an early day, and those
people along the lino who liavo con
tributed to tho enterprise, will ronp
the benefits of it.
The Whisk)' Question Again.
Any man going iuto business do-
sirt'B to locate whoro tho greatest
quantity of tho article iu which ho
deals c.m be sold. Liquor dealers
are no exception to this rule of busi
ness. They will voto to sell in town
if it is to their interest, that is if they
can sell mure ill town than in the
country. Aro not those who have
dealt nud wish to deal in liquor iu
favor of selling it in town! and if
they nro is it not conclusive proof that
they sell more in town than in tho
country? If less is sold in tho coun
try, tho evil is curtailed that much.
Tho difference iu no small item. J f
they can pay tho town tax of $500
and tho couuty tax of $25, and make
moro money than by selling iu the
couutry at a cost of only $25, they
must sell a yrcal (leal moro in town.
Tho town tax last year was $500, aud
it is not reasonable to stipposo it will
bo less if sold boro again. Tiiev would
liavo moved out and never paid tho
tax had it boon to their interest to do
so. Five hundred dollars worth of
liquor is enough to muko a dozen fam
ilies miserable and destitute, a hun
dred hearts sad, and send hunger ami
rags to succeed happiness and plenty.
Thcro mnst bo even moro than $500
difference iu tho sales in town and in
tho country, for they would hardly
quit tho country and como to town to
pay tho tax only. Somo say that
to keep it iu tho country would bo do
ing a wrong to tho country people,
and tlioy would liavo to seo and hear
tho disorder of dram-drinkers without
any marshal to protect them. A man
who is willing for it to bo sold on his
promises ought not to ooinplian ut
whatovor happons, and his neighbor
a half or mile away, will not bo able
to hoar much of tho annoyance. Truo,
it may bo a little disagrooablo to t hose
passing, but however reckless tho
crowd that gather nt such places, it it
u rare thing they have the audacity
to molest a peacablo poi son passing
along tho road attending to his busi
ness. If such should occur, there is
tho criminal law. Lot them be brought
before the courts and bo punished.
Tho courts nrc over open, and its offi
cers ready to preserve tho peace,
which is their bnsinsss and duty.
Any how, it is bettor that a few should
see a drunken man now and then,
than tuat moro than $500 worth of
liquor should bo drank by the peoplo
an«l its baneful effocts felt by tho wo
men and children of the land.
Again, it is said that if you will put
the question to voto out of tho county,
"wo nro with you.” Even in that case
some will still say, and with aa much
consistency, that to put it out of Polk
would throw it on Haralson, Paul 1-
ing and Floyd, and on this lino would
demand that it bo prohibited in tho
State, or let it apply to tho United
States, and then again it would bo too
bad to let tho "dear people" of Cana
da aud Mexico suffer. Some say they
"admit tho evil and wo know tho
country people have tho right to voto
it ont of tho county, but wo do’nt be-
liero they will do it, therefore wo are
opposed to Restriction.” This is tho
position of tho Cedartowu Express,
if wo understand it correctly. Wo
have a better opinion of the country
people than to suppose them so stupid
as to not sco the evil influences of
liquor, or seeing, so immoral as to
prefer it. They havo not called upon
us to ehoulder a greater evil because
they might i»n.iiUy have to ouduro a
less. It would nut bo just fur them
to do so.
