A true oxtract from tho minutes
Court. W. C. Knight, Clerk.
Ho was a tiller of tho ground. Tho
wonder is that ho didn’t kill his father
and then wcop bocauoo ho hadn't a
grandfather to kill. No doubt his
Early Rose polalooa, for which ho had
paid Adam $7 a band, had boon cut
down by bugs from tho head watois
of tho Euphrates. His Pennsylvania
wheat hud boon wintor killed, and
wasn't worth cuttiug. His Norway
oats had gono to straw, and would
not yield Avo pocks per aero, and his
black Spanish watermelons had been
stolen by boys, who had pulled up tho
vines, broken down bis patont pickot
foucc, and written scurrilous dogcrol
all over his back gate. No wonder ho
felt mad when ho saw Abel whistling
along with his Ano French mntinos,
worth $8 a bond, and wool going up
every day. No wonder ho Wanted to
kill somebody, aud thought ho’d prac
tice on Abel.
And Noah’s gotling drunk was not
all surprising. Ho hud bccomo a
husbandman. Ho had thrown away
magnificent opportunities. Ho might
havo had a monopoly of any profes-
business. Had ho studied
mcdiciuo thoro would not havo boon
another doctor within a thousand
miles to call him “quack;" nnd every
family would havo bought a boltlo of
'Noah’s Compound Extrnct of Gopher
Wood and Anti-Dclugo Syrup." As
politician ho might havo earned his
own ward solid, aud controlled two
Lhirds of tho delegatus in every con
vention. As a lawyer, ho would lmvo
been rotained in oaso tried at tho Ar
arat Quarter Sessions, or tho old Ark
ligh court of Admiralty. But ho
throw away all tlicso advantages and
look to agriculture. For a long time
tho ground was so wet ho could r
nothing but awoot flag aud bulrushes,
aud they at last bccomo a drug in tho
market. What wondur that when ho
did at last got a half a pock of grapoi
that woro not stung to death by Ja-
phat's honey boos, ho should havo
mado wine aud drowned his sorrows
a “flowing bowl."
Tho fact is, agriculture would do
moralizo a saint. I was almost a saint
hen I wont into it. I'in a demon
now. I’m at war with everything,
fight myself out of bod at 1 o’clock
wltou all my better nature tolls mo to
still till 7. I fight myself ihto tho
ardon to work like a brute, when rea
son and instinct tell ino to stay
and enjoy myself liko a man
fight tho pigs, tho chickens, the
molos, tho birds, tho bugs, tho worm:
ovorylhiug in which is tho burnt h of
lifo. I fight tho docks, tho burdock,
tho mulleins, tho thistles, tho gras:
tho woods, tho roots—tho whole veg
ilnblo kingdom. I light tho boat, the
tho frost and rain, tho hail—in short
fight tho univorso, aud get wkippl
iu every battle. I lmvo no more ad
miration to wasto on tho father of
Goorgo Washington for forgiving tho
destruction of his cherry troo
cherry troo is only a eurculio nursery
