We ore not surprised to see this
distinguished great and good man
alliguing himself with the profouud-

all important question. No man in
the United States Congiess is more
capable of rising above tho narrow

Mn. Editor: As you propose to
publish anything that is likely to be
buucfioial to our people and country,
I have concluded to poll a few
thoughts on tho subject of bee culture
iu our county.
"Boo culture is at presold, ono of
the rising sciences ns well ns one of
tho most botm.iful, ennobling and
captivating of all rural pursuits.
If tho above quotation bo true,
why is it that so few of our people
aro taking any interest in it ? Dor-
baps this question bus several answers

posed of Rovcrnl reasons. In tho
first place tho business scientifically jy. 1M

I will try to niiBWor in the Inst way
lean. Them area few persons who
are taking an interest in boo culture,
and 1 am inclined to think as a class
they are unselfish, and will to do all
they can for the advancement of the
c ioso, provided this effort does not
press too heavily on tbiir pockets.
This cuu be ettfaily done by giving in
structions on all convenient occasions
to ono another, and lootheis as oc
casion may offer. In order to do
this, lam of tho opinion that those
engaged in the business should form
societies in each county, when there
arc as many ns a half dozen in ouch
county. Organize by electing a pres
ident, vice-president ami secretary.
Then have stated mootings, us often
as they may think propor, and give a
general invitation to all, either male
female, who may wish to attend.
At these meetings each member
should tell what ho knows of the bus
iness that could in any way bo beno-
ficiul to others. This proceding will
bo apt to interest some of tho audi-
1 who may be induced to examine
and read for themselves, and conse
quently fall into ranks. TI10 mem
bers by exchanging ideas would he
greatly benefited, and consequently-
would become greater oxperts in the
business, and so make it more remu
nerative.
At these meetings those inclined to
superstition would hear the plain
tinlh and might he led to believe it,
rather than the tales of superstition,
which they have heard and believed
all their lives. When we overcome
these super.-f itious notions, then we
may expect tho business to tuko its
proper piace as a business pursuit.
Apiculture is plesant, profitable and
instructive. It is not confined to
men alone, but women may engage in
it, and with a little help occasionally
can make it pay as well or bettor
than almost any other female em
ployment. In order to be successful
however, one must L ike an interest in
jt—be willing lo work, und willing to
learn. Nature supplies an abun
dance of honey, but in such away as
to be entirely useless to man, if loft
to bis own ingenuity to gather it.
There is no method of utilizing it on
ly through the honey bee. Tae bee
was doubtless prepared by an Allwise
Creator, and endowed with instinct
to gather the sweets of nature, which
